CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH
COUNCIL’S FINAL MEETING (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Friday The final meeting this year of the Cambridge Borough Council was held last evening when there were present: The Mayor (Mr Edgar James), Messrs A. H. Nicoll, W. R. Garrard, K. L. Wilkinson, N. R. Souter, W. Moore, the town clerk (Mr F. T. Ray), engineer (Mr W. McK. Jeffery) and gasworks manager (Mr F. H. Green). The council discussed reports on the new bench installed at the gasworks. The gasworks manager stated that since the installation and operation of the new bench the output of gas had gone up. The council decided to make the final payment on the bench. Re-leasing Saleyards The borough solicitor forwarded correspondence from the Government departments in connection with the re-leasing of the saleyards to the three auctioneering firms. The Mayor said the position was very satisfactory, and certain little technicalities in connection with the lease were being overcome. The health inspector reported that certain repairs had been effected to the yards and recommended that a renewal of the license be granted. “Achilles Avenue” A ratepayer forwarded a suggestion that a recently-formed short new street should be called “Achilles” Street. It was the general opinion that the street suggested was hardly important enough for such a historical name and one with such a recent patriotic significance. The council appreciated the ratepayer’s suggestion that the name “Achilles” shou.ld be applied to some street in the borough. Two or three suggestions were offered by councillors but the one finding most favour was that offered by Mr W. Moore, that the main highway from the Karapiro Bridge to the eastern borough boundary (known as Gordon Road) be called “Achilles Avenue.” On the motion of the Mayor and Mr W. Moore it was agreed to this effect. The council also thanked Mr D. J. Lundon for his suggestion. Miscellaneous The Housing Department wrote agreeing to comply to the council’s request in connection with objections previously raised regarding a subdivision of land in Williams Street.— The council decided to approve of the sub-division. The headmaster of the Cambridge School thanked the council for the use of the municipal baths for school swimming classes. The St. John Ambulance Association sought a donation toward the new chassis for the motor ambulance. —The council decided to make a grant of £lO. It was decided that the hire of the
Town Hall for all patriotic functions be free of charge. Dog registration fees for 1940 were fixed at 10s for sporting dogs and 2s 6d for working animals. Speeding Alleged Mr Wilkinson reported that there was far too much speeding by through motorists in the borough, and especially along Hamilton Road. Mr Green stated that he and Mr Souter had been in touch with the area traffic inspector and he would be pleased to take borough traffic control in hand if requested by the council. It was agreed that the area traffic inspector be asked to deal with any speeding in the borough. Greetings The Mayor extended seasonal greetings to the council and hoped that the holidays would be happy and beneficial to all. He felt he had had the whole-hearted support of the council and he appreciated it very much. The council work had been a pleasure to him. Mr James also paid a fine tribute to the town clerk (Mr F. T. Ray) and wished him and his family a happy Christmas. Similar greetings were extended to the other officers and staff of the council. The Mayor said he thought it had been a period in which most useful work had been done by the engineer and the gasworks manager. The press also came in for a word of praise and good wishes. The Mayor’s greetings and good wishes were heartily reciprocated.
