RECORD AGAIN
ROAD AND RAIL POPULARITY OF CAMPAIGN LARGE EXODUS TO WELLINGTON Favoured with the promise of fine weather for the holiday period campers, tourists and other holidaymakers have been on the roads every day during the last week. Yesterday and today the volume of traffic increased to huge proportions. Cars heavily loaded, caravans by the score, and dozens of trailers bespoke the popularity of the touring and camping holiday. The roads in the Waikato carried almost record traffic throughout today. During the week the main volume of road traffic was directed towards the south, where the Centennial Exhibition in Wellington is proving a great attraction. Seaside resorts, particularly Tauranga, Waihi and Raglan, are also drawing a large measure of popularity. Most of the travellers have got away to an early start, but it is expected that many more will be on the road tomorrow and Monday. The railways have also had to cope with a heavy volume of business and extra trains have been booked day after day. To cope with the passengers on the main routes, many spare carriages have been transferred from the less heavily engaged shorter runs, Yesterday and today the Frankton station presented a busy scene, when the largest exodus of travellers so far this week travelled to Wellington. The .refreshment room at the station had to cater for a huge crowd of customers during the day, nine trains passing through from Auckland to Wellington. Five trains, three more than usual, passed through from Wellington to Auckland during the day. Four trains were scheduled to pass through Frankton for Wellington today, and there will be two tomorrow, three on Monday and four on Tuesday.
