AMATEUR ATHLETICS

INTER=HOUSE CONTESTS

HAMILTON CLUB MEETING SPECTACULAR MARCH PAST For the first time in Hamilton an inter-house athletic contest for both men’s and women’s teams was held at Hinemoa Park on Saturday in conjunction with the Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club’s annual open meeting. The weather, although threatening, remained fine while the track was in snlendid order. A spectacular feature of the afternoon’s programme was the march past of the women’s teams who were led by the Waikato Regimental and Hamilton Municipal Band. In their many-coloured and immaculate costumes they made a fine picture as they swung along in even lines. The Mayor of Hamilton, Mr H. D. Caro, Mr N. K. Hooker, patron of the Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club, and Mr A. H. Malcolm, the president, took the salute. In a brief speech the Mayor congratulated the teams and the club for inaugurating the contests. Points were awarded for both the marching display and in a series of athletic contests, for both women and men, which followed. The women’s section was won by Hooker and Kingston with 28.9 points; H. and J. Courts were second with 24.1, and New Zealand Dairy third with 22.3 points. New Zealand Dairy won the men's section, securing 16 points, State Advances being second with 13 points and W. B. Young third with seven points. Handsome cups were awarded the winners. Special women’s games in which the inter-house teams engaged were arranged by Miss E. McNicol. Fine Pole Vault A former Auckland champion, J. Ferguson, recorded an excellent performance when he won the pole vault handicap on the open meeting programme with an actual leap of lift. Another good effort was that of Ron Buckingham who won the open 880 yards off 75 yards to record the phenomenal time of lm 54 4-ss. D. A. Dreyer, another outstanding young performer over middle distances, was a close second from the 45-yard mark. Uniformly good times were recorded in both men’s and women's sprint events which were all keenly fought out. Exhibition javelin throws were given during the afternoon by C. P. Clegg, former Auckland and New Zealand champion. Results were as follows: Running Events 100 Yards Open.—First heat: p. K. Ahern (fUyds) 1. K. Pickett . Syds) ?. T. M Roper (2*yds) 3: time 10s.
