END OF SEASON

“A RUNAWAY GIRL” BRIGHT MUSICAL COMEDY NOT A FINANCIAL SUCCESS Two performances (afternoon and evening) of “A Runaway Girl” were given by the Hamilton Operatic Society on Saturday, bringing the week’s season to a close. Good work was done by all concerned in the production, with the result that those present enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Unfortunately the audiences during the week were not as large as had been hoped for, and the season resulted in a financial loss. This is to be regretted, for though as a production “A Runaway Girl” did not reach the usual Hamilton standard it was bright and entertaining and well deserved success. Probably the unsettled international situation had an effect on attendances, as it has affected every other branch of life. At the close of Saturday night’s production there were the usual gay scenes with the throwing of streamers, the singing of “They Are Jolly Good Fellows,” and the presentation of flowers and other gifts, until everyone on stage was laden with tributes of appreciation. Thanks by President The president of the society, Mr S. N. Ziman, expressed regret that the financial result had not been better, which meant that the patriotic funds, to which it had been intended to devote the profits, would not benefit as hoped. However, the society was not discouraged, and would go on to even greater things. It had done excellent work, and he congratulated all concerned. He also thanked all who had contributed to the success of the production. When Mr Ziman mentioned the producer (Mrs E. Mcßeath), the music director (Mr Stanley James), the Waikato Regimental Band and others there were cheers and the singing of “They are Jolly Good Fellows.” Mrs Mcßeath returned thanks and congratulated the members on their splendid work. Mr M. Thomas, on behalf of the members, handed gifts to the producer and the music director. After the performance a happy party was held, and thus ended the Hamilton Operatic Society’s 1939 season.
