ACCIDENTS IN MINES
RESCUE STATION OPENED WEST COAST IMPROVEMENT (Special lo Times) GREYMOUTH, Thursday The Dobson mine rescue station, equipped with the latest appliances, was opened by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb. His hope was that the station would never be called upon to provide trained men to rescue miners from a disaster; that the plant would rot and rust away without being used in a practical way. A large crowd was given a demonstration of modem methods of mine rescue by a squad of miners who were equipped to work for two hours in the ■worst of gases. Mr Webb stated the intention was to train rescue brigades at Dobson, and to extend the plants to every other field to deal with any emergency. This provision of a rescue apparatus did not remove the responsibility for proper ventilation and care of the miners from the companies. The total cost of the station, including equipment, was £3OOO. Because it was felt that the industry should carry part of the cost, a levy of Id a ton was made, but the increased production of coal had made a reduction to id possible.
