NEW COLLIERY OPENED
BIG OUTPUT EXPECTED 5,000,000 TONS AVAILABLE COAL OF BEST QUALITY (Special to Times) GREYMOUTH, Thursday Developed at a cost of £18,200, the Strongman mine, replacing the James mine, now being worked out, was officially opened at Rapahoe by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb. The modern bins are situated close to those of the James mine, the bins of which will be demolished when the mine is worked out The mine woujd open up one of the finest coal seams on the West Coast, if not in New Zealand, said Mr R. McTaggart, Mayor of Runanga. He believed it would supply coal equal to the best produced in the days of the Point Elizabeth mine. Mr Webb said the Government gave the name of Strongman to the mine because it felt that Mr Charles Strongman was one of the outstanding mining men in the world. The field was estimated to contain more than 5,000,000 tons of coal, and was expected to be worked for about 50 years. One mile and a-half of new tunnel had to be opened up, and the new rope road was two miles and a-half in length. Production was now 300 tons a day; but the mine aimed to produce 800 tons daily. The cost of the bins was £25,000, and he doubted whether any in the world excelled them.
