ABRUPT FALL
OCTOBER CUSTOMS REVENUE RETURNS AT AUCKLAND (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Wednesday After reaching the highest monthly total for some years in September, customs revenue collected at Auckland dropped abruptly in October to the lowest figure since May, 1936. As a' result of last month’s heavy fall, customs duty collected to date this year, £2,899,682, is £10,358 below that for the corresponding period last vear. Tyre duty for the 10 months, &25,954, also shows a small decline of £739. Other items are still higher than last year, the petrol tax collection, £752,938, being £40,950 above that for the first 10 months of 1938. The aggregate from excise on beer, £186,385, is £18,084 higher than for the corresponding period last year, while sales tax, £908,492, shows an increase of £53,517. DECLINE IN SOUTH PETROL TAX LOWER (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Customs returns at Christchurch I for October, 1938 and 1939, were as follows:—Customs, £88,699 and £74,084; beer excise, £14,352 and £20,238; petrol tax, £24,604 and £19,797; tyre tax, £1033 and £824; sales tax, £36,405 and 45,050; light dues, £724 and £765; export levies on wool, £4B and £27; meat, £378 and £923; miscellaneous, £69 and £6049; totals, £166,312 and £167,757. For the seven months of 1938-39 and 1939-40 the figures were: Customs £679,719 and £692,168; beer, £75,550 and £88,699; petrol £169,663 and £181,916; tyres, £7131 and £5769; sales tax, £256,508 and £292,011; light dues, £4425 and £3952; export levies on wool, £1335 and £1729; meat, £8234 and £9249; miscellaneous, £SOO and £6511; totals, £1,203,111 and £1,282,015.
