MUSSOLINI’S SPEECH
APPRECIATION IN FRANCE NEW CONDITION IN EUROPE ANGLO-FRENCH FIRMNESS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept. 25, 3.15 p.m.) PARIS, Sept. 24 A semi-official statement, commenting on Signor Mussolini’s speech, states: “Great interest is taken in the speech here, and the indications contained in it of Italy’s attitude and Mussolini’s action with a view to maintaining peace, for example his move on September 1, have been highly appreciated by the French Government.” The reply which the latter made to the Italian Note gave evidence of this appreciation. It adds that the German aggression, leading to English and Frencii participation, also the putting into effect of a German military plan that had been minutely prepared before-hand, also the partition of Poland and the many other events following the initiative taken by Italy, had created a new condition in Europe. The British and French Governments had already made known their position with the utmost clarity. The statements by Mr Chamberlain and M. Daladier defined once and for all the position of the Allies.
