OBITUARY

MR D. L. POPPELWELL (By Telegraph.—Press Association) GORE, Saturday The death has occurred of Mr Dugald Louis Poppelwell, J.P., Mayor of Gore for ten separate terms. He was a steward of the Racing Club for 42 years and was connected with numerous other organisations at various times. He was first president of the Gore Chamber of Commerce. A recognised authority on flora and fauna and Maori traditions, Mr Poppelwell secured Gore’s large bush domain at Hokonui Hills from the Government. He was a senior member of the Gore bar and president for a period of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Law Society. Mr Poppelwell was president of the New Zealand Catholic Federation, 1914-1919, and in 1916 was decorated by the Pope with the Papal Cross. He is survived by his widow and a family of three sons and two daughters.
