CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION
A TRANSFORMATION Barely 18 months ago the site of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition was a waste of sand dunes dotted with lupins, and in one corner was a rubbish tip. Today the exhibition buildings, massive and colourful and set among ordered gardens and wide, sweeping paths, make a complete transformation of the scene. The work is increasing to an active crescendo as opening day approaches. At present there are more than 800 men and women working within the grounds. Their tasks vary from the surfacing of the roadways to designing, drawing, and general executive work. Beneath the roading in the grounds, which is equal to 12 miles of main highway, there is a network of drainage pipes, water pipes, gas mains and electric cables. The drainage and sewerage systems alone involve 12 miles of piping and many more miles for the water supply. There are 275 miles of electric cable . laid, linking up with an intricate net- N work every section of the buildings and grounds. The paths will be paved with crushed brick covering 81,000 square yards.
