All other Consular officials are safe. AMERICA PREPARING LARGE CONTRACTS PLACED RECONDITIONING GERMAN LINERS (United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept. 23, 2.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 Defence contracts have been placed, totalling 04,000.000 dollars, of which 58,585,0- are allocated to bombers, observation, pursuit and training planes. The maritime commission has placed contracts for 11 ships, making the year's total 73. At present there are 1400 American merchant ships, 300 of which are transoceanic. The Commission is considering reconditioning the former German liners which were taken over in 1917, and which they faave renamed Vernon, Monticello, America, and George Washington.
