WOMEN’S GOLF

MRS MCDONALD NEW CKAMPION This last week marked the climax of the year’s activities in the three days of championship play. The big surprise in the senior competition was the elimination in the second round of Mrs Mander who has been champion four times in the last five years. This left Mrs McDonald as first favourite but she nearly spoiled the expectations of her backers. In the final she found a doughty opponent in Mrs Seyb, who, if she had not started nervously and lost the first 5 holes, might have been the new champion. At the end of 18 holes she was only 1 down; after 27 holes was 2 up; after 33 holes was all square; lost the 34th by 3-putting to be 1 down and the 35th and 36th were halved in fives leaving Mrs McDonald the winner after a match which was full of exciting recoveries on the part of both players. From a spectator's point of view this was the most exciting final for some years although rivalled by the occasion when Mrs Mander and Mrs McDonald went to the 37th for a decision, their medal scores for the 37 holes being identical. Mrs Edwards was in the minds of most as the possible winner of the junior championship and here again expectations were not disappointed although Mrs Toombs took the game to the 10tli and might have gone still further but for a putting lapse. Winner of Gillies Vase The Gillies Vase was won by Mrs R. Pearson after a good game with Mrs A. T. James. They were both less than 50 going out which is good scoring for juniors. Mrs Pearson is in only her second year as a golfer and should make her mark in the club. One reason for Mrs Edwards being considered a good prospect for the junior championship was that she reduced her handicap last Monday from 21 to 19 showing that she was right on her game at the right time. A further reduction has been made by Mrs Booth who has reduced by 5 strokes from 28 to 23. She seems to have turned the corner between mediocrity and good performance. From the point of view of the C grade, the biggest event of the week was the qualifying round for their championship. Although they were overcome by nervousness there were some good scores, Mrs Christie and the Endean sisters just missing handicap figures.
