WAR MUNITIONS

GREAT ACTIVITY IN BRITAIN NUMBERS INCREASING DAILY 'United Press Aasn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received .Sept. 22, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 21 Mr E. L. Burgin, Minister of Transport, told the House of Commons that 68 firms other than those normally engaged in making munitions at present were producing shells. 700 were producing components, and the number was increasing daily. The first task was to defend the country from air attacks; next came equipment for the fighting services; and, thirdly, the provision of sufficient reserves of equipment for the expan-' sion of the military forces as the needs of the war required. Immensely greater organisation than in 1914-18 was already constituted and controlled by the Munitions Council with executive powers. Since the outbreak of the war orders for supplies had been placed exceeding £70.000.000. The Ministry of Supply was in close contact with Mr Lloyd George and Mr Winston Churchill.
