GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS According to Sydney reports the Te Rapa representative, Olympus, has been training on attractively nL Randwick. Consistent Place Getters ’Hunting Lore and Old Sur~cy have now run seven consecutive seconds for Mr 11. L. Collin&on. Winning Family Ked Chief, winner of the hack distance event at Awapuni on Saturday, is a brother to Colincamps, a winner at his last start at Utaki in June. Plans For Viracious Viracious, who suffered an attack of bleeding at the recent Wanganui meeting, is being given a short speii before being required to race again. Likely Improvers Three maiden horses who impressed at Awapuni last Saturday as likely early winners were La Coquette and the stablemates Singapore and Kinkajou. Beaten Early The Bigot, who again ran in blinkers. was one of the disappointments of the Carnarvon Cup at Awapuni last Saturday, as he was flrst horse in the race beaten. Was Nearly Down Trebor was nearly down in the Carnarvon Cup at Awapuni last Saturday, but he took no harm from the incident. His stablemate, Boomerang, was badly away in the open sprint. Addition to Team The Australian-bred mare Feldberg, by Backwood from Humorada, is the latest addition to K. Heaton's team at Ellerslie. She has been qualified and may be* given a trial as a hurdler at the spring meetings. Auckland Entries Nominations for the handicap events end forfeits for the Great Northern Guineas and Welcome Stakes, at the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting on October 14 and 16, close with the secretary, Mr W. S. Spence, at 5 p.m. to-morrow, Friday. Inclined To Hang Out The Leighon three-year-old Saxon Tor has an abundance of pace, but he is still inclined to hang out, though he was kept to the course at Awapuni last Saturday. Once he learns to hold his line he will win his share of races.

Satisfactory Considering the fact that Clarion Call has been off the scene for just over a year and has also been in trouble, he ran a very satisfactory

race on Saturday, a feature being the way he finished on from well back in the early running.

Beaulivre Remaining The Avondale Guineas winner. Beaulivre, is remaining at Avondale until the Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting at Ellerslie next month, when he will contest the Great Northern Guineas. His stablemate, Kathbella, accompanied by Hagen, has returned to Hastings. Trip Cancelled Owing to the present crisis, the Ellerslie jockey R. W. McTavish has had to cancel his trip to Melbourne, where he was to have ridden for a leading stable under a retainer. McTavish rode in fine form at the Avondale Jockey Club's spring meeting and his admirers will no doubt be glad that he is remaining in the Dominion, especially as there is a dearth of good horsemen at present. A Smart Filly Sleeveless, winner of the concluding hack scurry at the Foxton meeting, is owned by Mr A. F. M. Symes, but is raced on lease. She had four races last season and won the last at Woodville in December, beating Duncannon and Kobi. Sleeveless had been galloping very well and her connections were confident of success. She is smart, but whether so good as her admirers claim remains to be seen. Last season she was trained at Hastings, but is now with J. J. Waller at Awapuni. Solid Breeding The Orari studmaster, Mr G. A. Kain, who bred The Cardinal, was also responsible for breeding the Foxton maiden winner, Night Eruption. She is a four-year-old mare .by Nightmarch from Molten, by Paper Money Lava, by Solferiuo—Formless, by Multiform. This is the family which produced Bon Reve, Havering, Erie, Noctuiform, and other first-class horses. ’ Night Eruption was the next lot to The Cardinal at the 1937 sales and she fetched only 40 guineas. Stoutly Bred The Cardinal, winner of the Avondale Cup, is just out of hack class, but he hfls shown himself capable of beating a fairly strong_ field and it should be only the forerunner of further successes. as he stays so well. This is not surprising, for he is soiidly bred, being by Night Raid from Palestrina, a Clarenceau mare who won the Oaks, while her dam Judith was by Martian from imported Hebrew Maid. This is a good winning family. The Cardinal was bred in 1935 by Mr G. A. Kain and was purchased at the Trentharu yearling sales by Mr J. Corbett, of Matamata, for IGOgns.

Southern Juveniles A field of nine paraded for the John Grigg Stakes, but when in the birdcage some of the youngsters did not look ready for the task, and Shikari went out of favour following a report about contracting a slight cold (reports “Sentinel'’). Ilfc looks a good deal on the big side, and has somewhat cramped action behii/d displayed by lifting his hocks when walking did not suggest that he would jump away and gather speed from a flat-foot start. Doria is a shapely Ally and well forward in condition, and Gold Flight is rather smaller in stature. The Ringmaster colt Whiphand had evidently done well, and presented a nippy appearance, but made no show in the race. , 'His stablemate, Don’t Forget, a likely-looking colt by Myosotis, came 'along at the finish to get third, and may improve. Noko lacks size, and after showing early speed dropped out. Wild Fox tan a fair race, and Tatting and Sunny Queen require more time. Don’t Forget may improve more than any of the defeated lot.
