TENSION IN EUROPE
GERMAN REPLY TO BRITAIN NO INTERFERENCE WITH VITAL CLAIMS VISCOUNT HALIFAX AND HERR HITLER TO BROADCAST (United Pres* Assn.—Elec Tel. Copyright) (Received August 2i, 11.43 a.m.) LONDON, August 23 An official statement says that in view of the special meeting of Parliament the King has decided to return to London from Balmoral, arriving at 8 a.m. to-morrow and holding a Privy Council at Buckingham Palace in the morning. The Foreign Secretary, Viscount Halifax, will broadcast from 10 Downing Street at 9.30 p.m. on August 24. His speech will be relayed throughout the world. Herr Hitler will speak at Tannenburg at 11 a.m. on August 27. The Home Office has instructed local authorities to take the necessary steps to ensure that street lighting can be extinguished at any time necessary. Official quarters do not confirm that the Prime Minister, c Mr N eville Chamberlain, received a memorandum from 1 Herr Hitler that Danzig is no affair of Britain’s. The British Ambassador, Sir Nevile Henderson, had a brief interview with Herr Hitler at Berchtesgaden and then returned to Salzburg, whence he departed by air lor Berlin. It is reliably stated in Berlin that Herr Hitler told Sir Nevile Henderson that Germany will not permit the British guarantee to affect her vital rights and claims. The Berlin correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain reports that Herr Hiller yesterday dispatched couriers to most Governments of Europe, setting out Germany’s position in relation to the Danzig Corridor. Official circles are confident that the trouble will be over within 48 hours.
