TROTTING

POINTERS FOR EPSOM JOSEDALE GRATTAN WELL SIR TONY IN GOOD FETTLE By “Padlock”) Following tiic recent heavy rain the going at Epsom on Saturday for the August meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club will probably be on the fi heavy side. P tl Useful When Fit u Glen Bingen is a solid trotter when |r attuned, but his form towards the end q of last season was disappointing and 0 . he will need to show improvement on j f Saturday to make his presence felt in the Introductory Handicap at Epsom. (i Gold Kip 11 Gold Kip is in solid condition for b racing at the Epsom gathering on < Saturdav and several useful perform- I ances last season, which included a n success in the Farmers’ Handicap at I Cambridge, entitle him to a following r in the betting. And it should be to g his advantage that he can handle h heavy ground. v Racing Consistently „ Amywyn raced consistently last sea- v son without meeting with the best of p luck but as she lias been shaping pleasingly in recent work-outs there -5 is every reason to anticipate that she may make amends at an early date. c She is engaged at Epsom over the a week-end and will strip in splendid c fettle. i Consistent at Addington Marsceres has won 13 races in his career, 10 of them on the Addington ( track. He has succeeded over all dis- l tances, in saddle as well as sulky, and on soft and firm tracks. J May Not Suit 1 lhi Ihi showed good form on oc- ( casions last season and with the go- ■ ing reasonably firm this week at | Epsom he must be conceded pros- | peels. However, if the track is on , the heavy side it is questionable . whether he will be seen to best ad- , vantage as he is not in his element when the footing is slippery. Has Furnished Well Grand Dame is reported to have furnished well in recent weeks and as her record during the latter part ol‘ last season was encouraging she should meet with a measure of success in the months ahead. Last term her best performance was at the winter meeting here when, after hitting the front three furlongs from home she carried on for a decisive success. Double Peter Double Peter has been hitting out in solid fashion on the tracks at Claudelands in recent weeks and indications are he will strip in splendid fettle for racing at Auckland this week. On Saturday he is to contest the Grey Lynn Handicap and as he lias performed well at Epsom in the past he will not lack a measure of support on the machines. Condition of Sir Tony A line through the recent work of Sir Tony would indicate that he will strip in great nick for racing ahead. In six starts last season he registered a meritorious second and a third, his best performance being at Epsom, when, after being fairly well back at the straight entrance lie finished very solidly to get within four lengths of Elliotvale. As he can handle heavy ground he 'must he considered in the Introductory Handicap on Saturday at Epsom. Tsana Fit The Jack Potts gelding Tsana, whose form at the winter meeting at Epsom was amply deserved, has been hitting out in attractive style on the tracks of late and his ability to act well in heavy going will be a factor in his favour when the Grey Lynn Handicap comes up for decision on Saturday. His form in the earlier part of the season was somewhat disappointing, but in winning the second division of the Manukau Handicap at Auckland he demonstrated that he was becoming solid with experience and more should he heard of him in the season 193940. Auckland Trotting Cup Permission to use the title Auckland Centennial Gold Trotting Cup for the principal race at the summer meeting, ' which will open at Epsom on Deccm- , her 27, has been applied fqr to the New Zealand Trotting Association by ’ the Auckland Club. The committee : announces that the stake has been ' fixed at £ISOO, including a gold cup i valued at £IOO. The limit will be ar- ■ ranged later. The prize equals that offered in 1937, when the limit was 4min 25sec, and the 1930 race, 4min 2'Ssec limit. In 1929 the allotment L was £IOSO, and 100 guineas gold cup, _ 4min 28sec, and in 1928, was £2200 J and 100 guineas gold cup, 4min 27seo : limit. In 1931, 19-32, 1-933, and 1935, ; the stake was £730; in 1934, £I2OO s and £SO gold cup. s Josedale Grattan 3 Few make greater appeal in the • Grey Lynn Handicap than the we 111 performed Josedale Grattan, whose 3 performances towards the latter part 3 of last season drew pointed attention 3 to his prospects as a remunerative 1 proposition this term. In all, he 5 started only on three occasions for a - win and a second and £IBO in prize 1 money. (His success in the first divie sion of the Mangere Handicap at i Epsom stamped him as a courageous o type and his achievement in winning - as he did from what appeared a seemy ingly impossible position will claim e him an optimistic following when he ;, goes into the starter's hands this r week. {• The Leading Sire For the second year in succession Jack Potts is at the head of the winning sires' list, his progeny having won £23,017 10s in stakes. This total was made up in 99 wins and a dead-beat, 90 seconds, and 7G thirds, u Last year, Jack Potts was represented u by tiic winners of 99 races. The rca cord is still held by lley de Oro, with p 105 winners, in the 1935-3 G season. _ Wrack is second on the list this sea(l son, with 61 winners of £15,827, and Rev de Oro is third, with the winners e of 34 races and a dead-heat for £15,- ) Gl4. Next on the list is Grattan Loyal, who left winners of 05T races worth £1i.2!0. In the actual number of winners left, Grattan Loyal is second to .lack Putts. Man o* War follows with £9B io. Nelson Derby £Bl3 i 10s. Frank Worthy £5980, s Adioo Guy £ 4605, Guy Parrish £4441, Travis Ax worthy £3889, and Native King £3819.
