TREE-PLANTING SCHEME

MEMORIAL FOR CHILDREN BEAUTIFICATION OF RESERVES Tree-planting as a means of commemorating the Dominion's 100th birthday was discussed at the meeting of the Hamilton Centennial Committee, yesterday when a scheme was brought forward under which every child on the town's primary and secondary school rolls would participate. The meeting was presided over by tho Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, who is the chairman of the committee. Outlining the scheme, Mr W. 11. Paul stated that it was expected that about 5000 children would participate in the planting, which would serve a great purpose by adding to the beauty of Hamilton’s parks and reserves. As a permanent memorial of the scheme and of the Centennial celebrations, each school would be provided with a plan showing the number and name of each tree, and also (he name of the scholar to whom the tree had been allotted. The plan would be suitably framed and kept at the school for all time. Reminder for a Lifetime “The suggestion is an excellent one. for it will give the children a permanent interest in the town's reserves and in the Centennial,” said the Mayor. "The trees will be a constant reminder of the celebrations for a lifetime, and in this way 1 think we are doing something for posterity.” In reply to Mr A. K. Gibbons regarding the location of the trees, Mr Paul stated that a number of suggestions had been considered. It had been suggested that the Technical High School and the High School could use part of the Hamilton Lake reserve, West School could probably find room on its new grounds, Hillcrest at Galloway Park, Hamilton Last at Jes-

mond Park, Whitiora on a section owned by the Domain Board past No. I Bridge, while land would be made available for the purpose for the Frankton and Fairfield schools. After further discussion the proposal was approved.
