“YEAR OF REJOICING”

MAYOR’S CENTENNIAL MESSAGE TRIBUTE TO PIONEERS RE-CREATION OF EARLY DAYS “The year 1940 will be one of great rejoicing and celebration, for then it is that our Dominion will have completed its first 100 years.” said Mr H. D. Caro, chairman of the Hamilton Centennial Committee, in his Gentennial message at a meeting of the committee yesterday. “Throughout the length and breadth of New Zealand the people will celebrate the Gentennial birthday with a spirit of thanksgiving and gratitude to those stalwart pioneers who with a splendid determination of purpose, so truly laid the foundation of our nation and left us with a heritage of freedom of which we may justly be proud—a freedom to think, act and worship as we wish. Surely no one could ask for more, and it is lo be hoped that, the Dominion's second 100 years will see the people dedicate their endeavours towards the advancement and expansion of the wonderful progress that lias been recorded in the first century. Year of Opportunity “The Centennial year promises to be one of glorious opportunity, but, apart from our celebrations, our efforts should bo directed towards the re-creation, by colourful pageantry and other representation, of the days of the past. In those days a nation was in the making, and it rests with us to reproduce some of the scenes and incidents of those times as a reminder of the debt we owe to the men and women who made our great inheritance possible In addition we can hope that through our efforts the present and coining generations will not be denied the comfort of the traditions which we in our own time hold sacred “It is also our fervent hope that the Centennial will, in effect, prove an incentive for the people of our Dominion to endeavour to recapture the fine spirit of the pioneers and to strive for a still more fruitful future so that our nation may blossom under the influences of peace and prosperity.” The Mayor’s message will be circulated throughout the town.
