WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

AT HILLCREST The Hillcrest Women's Institute he Ids its monthly meeting in the Nixon Street Hall recently. The president, Mrs Morley, extended a hearty welcome to a new member, Mrs Wright. Invitations were received from the following Institutes, to attend their birthday parties ;—Nawton-Rotokauri, Te Kowhai and Wliitiora. The roll call, “A Joke,” caused great amusement and a prize awarded by the president was won by Mrs Campbell. The competition winners were:— Jar of marmalade. Mrs Morley 1. Mrs Cockhead 2, Mrs Cox 3: thrift article, Mrs Cockhead 1, Mrs Cox 2, Mrs Cordon 3. Competitions for September are baby’s frock not to cost more than 2s and best, ironed shirt (with collar attached). The roll call will be "Uses of Paper.” The hostesses were Mesdames Power, Batters and Lewies. AT MELVILLE The monthly meeting of the Melville Women's Institute was held recently in the hall. Mrs Prisk presided. A new member, Mrs Millar, was extended a warm welcome. Invitations to attend Whitiora and Te Kowhai birthday parties were received. Mrs prisk was appointed delegate to attend the group meeting. Members agreed to take tea and entertainment up to the Bailiie Ward this month. The results of competitions were as follows:—Sponge, Mrs Duff 1, Mrs Payne 2; vase of spring flowers, Mrs Duff 1, Mrs Chainey 2. Social competitions were won by Mrs Bramley and Mrs C. Brown. Mrs C. Willey was in charge of the sales table. AT TE AROHA Mrs Sharkey presided at the August meeting of the Te Aroha Women's Institute. The roll call was, “A true, funny incident.” It was decided to obtain funds for the purchase of a piano as a Centennial effort, and plans were made for a garden party at the home of Mrs F. Martin. A notification was received from Mrs Schofield, president of the Federation, stating she would pay a visit to the branch in October next. Invitations to various functions were accepted from the Paeroa Women's Institute, Elstow Women's Division and Pan-Pacific Women's Association. IL was decided to suggest to the Thames Valley Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Association that it obtain for its Centennial show the loan of pictures from Auckland, as had been done, by the Te Kuiti Show Association . Mrs F. Martin spoke on the planting of campanales and the correct way to propagate carnation cuttings. •The flower name competition was won by Mrs Sharkey, who received a gerbera from Mrs Martin. Mrs Sharkey also won the bloom competition, Mrs Deverell being second. The winner of the marmalade competition was Mrs Deverell. with Mrs Flay second and Mrs Williams third. Mrs Curtis was successful in the guessing of a song title. Mrs Stables was hostess for tha evening. AT TE PAHU The August meeting of the Te Pahu Women's Institute was held in t.he hall recently. Mrs N'ewland presided over a fair attendance of members and welcomed one new member, Miss M. Haddock. Miss McGuinness, of Hamilton, gave a talk dealing with the origin of the Plunket Society and the work of the late Sir Truby King. A vote of thanks was accorded her. A competition, “Recognising members from juvenile photographs,” caused much interest and was won by Mrs Hills. Competitions for the day were won as follows:—Stencilled article, Mrs T. Charleston; best bloom, Mrs F. Strong 1, Mrs Haddock 2; ladies’ spray, Mrs U. Beet 1, Miss Margaret Hills 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, .Mesdames C. Arthur, M. Arthur and J. U. Watt. Competitions for September will be best bloom, four pikelets, and best collection of spring flowers. AT WAHAROA The August meeting of the Waharoa Women's Institute, which was presided over 1*;/ Mrs B. W. Burns, was well attended. The meeting took the form of a “Mothers’ afternoon.” Visitors attending from Matarnata included Mrs G. G. Bell, Mrs Green and Mrs S. Ellery. Those attending from Waitoa were Mrs Kerr. Mrs Lynch, Mrs J. B. Wathen and Mrs BlomfTeld. Mrs Whibley and Mrs Hartley were nominated as members. During the afternoon, Mrs Bell (gave an interesting talk, the subject being. “Be Prepared.” Mrs Bell spoke on the many ways in which women can be of assistance to their country in time of emergency. The item for the afternoon was a humorous "Mime” presented by the Waitoa visitors and was much appreciated. The roll call, “Schoolboy howlers” was well answered. Mrs J. Towns kindly presented a visitors' book, which was duly signed by all visitors present. Competition results were as follows:—Best flower, Mrs Thomson: puff pastry, Mrs Guy j. Mrs Petch 2, Mrs Gunn 3; lemon honey, Mrs Marshall 1, Mrs Henderson 2, Mrs Guy ::; jug cover. Mrs Leigh 1. Mrs J*. While 2, Mrs Tongs 3. A spelling competition was won by Mrs Booth. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdijgges Cresswell. Tordoff, Tungs, Williams and Scholium.

AT MATAMATA There was a fair attendance at the August meeting of the Matarnata Women's Institute. Mrs Stewart presided. A radio play, given by .Mesdames Stewart, Hawes, Elery, Watts, Sorrenson and Williams, was much enjoyed. A competition arranged by Mrs Stewart was won by Mrs Schoiler. The results of the points competitions were us follows:—Marmalade, Mrs Elerv 1. Mrs Taylor 2, Mrs Henderson 3; best bloom. Mrs Crabb 1, Mrs Taylor 2, Mrs F. Mateer 3; knitted cardigan. Mrs Webster 1, Mrs Taylor 2, Mrs Schoiler 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were:— Mesdames Smith, Brunton, Dobson and C. Brunton. AT WAITOA The August meeting of the Waitoa Women's Institute was held in the local nail recently. The prcsidenl, Mrs 11. Kerr, occupied the chair. A iarg-e attendance included visitors from Morrinsville Institute and a very pleasant afternoon was spent. Mrs A. Harden gave an interesting demonstration on quilting. The roll call, “Riddles,” passed a happy halfhour. The Glee Club members sang two songs which were much appreciated. A competition for the host home-made Cornish pasty was won by Mrs W. Wood with Mrs R. Colson second and Mrs A. E. Blackwell third. The thought l'or the month was. “Don't he a crank—he a self-starter." The afternoon closed with afternoon ' tea served by the hostesses. Mesdames B. Malcolm, W. Luxton, R. Johnston, and Miss E. Smith. AT LICHFIELD The monthly meeting of the Lichfield Women's Institute was presided over by the President, Mrs Wooderson. Mrs Tullock gave a short talk on i,he Putaruru library. A competition irranged by Mrs Burgess was won by Mrs Hamilton, and a treasure hunt was won by Mrs Boyles. The* motto was “A good laugh is sunshine in the house,” and the rollcall “ First day at school ” was well answered. The competition, “ Pegbag from sugar-hag ” was won by Mrs Boyles. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Young and Pcpperill. AT KIO KIO Mrs Luxmore, president, presided over the monthly gathering of the Kio Kio Women’s Institute, when there was a large attendance despite unfavourable weather conditions. The roll call was, “The sayings of children,” and this proved very amusing. The competitions resulted as follows: Tea cosy, Mrs Henderson 1, Mrs Trott 2, Mesdames Hall, Luxmore and Scown (equal) 3; vase of flowers, Mrs Rae 1, Mrs Luxmore 2, Mrs Wallace 3.

Mesdames F. Rogers and Henderson were the hostesses.
