ABSTAINERS’ ASSOCIATION PROPOBAL OUTLINED AFFILIATION WITH ENGLAND (Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Thursday A proposal that a New Zealand Abstaining Motorists’ Association, with the head office in Wellington, should be formed, is made by Mr H. W. Milner in a note attached to the annual report of the New Zealand Alliance. The alliance is at present holding its annual meeting in Wellington. Mr Milner states that recently an Abstaining Motorists’ Association was launched successfully in England, having the Duchess of Hamilton and Lord Clwvd as joint presidents, and Viscount Astor, Lady Lawson and the Lord Bishop of Norwich as vice-pre-sidents. "I feel sure," said Mr Milner, "that such an association could do much to I draw public attention to the dangers of moderate drinking among motorists, and to encourage the practice of abstinence among motor drivers of all j classes in New Zealand.” j In advocating the formation of such an association in New Zealand he recommends that it be affiliated with the organisation in England, and that the badge used in England be adopted here. The question of the annual I membership lee was a matter to be | decided. In England the fee for priv- | ate members was 7s 6d and for proI fessional members ss, and there was a life membership fee of £3 ss. j The objects of the association menItioned are: (a) The encouragement, in the interests of public safety, of abstinence among drivers of mech- ! anically-controlied vehicles; ,b> to • obtain, by such means as the committee j shall from time to time arrange, j special terms of insurance for abI staining motorists (10 per cent dis- ! count on ruling premiums is stated i to be available to members through : one particular company); (c) to encourage among members the use of unlicensed hotels; and (d) to press forward such measures as would promote sobriety and greater safety on the roads.
