CURRENT PROGRAMMES CIVIC THEATRE Rollicking comedy and romance will be the order of the day when “Wife, Husband and Friend," which co-stars Loretta Young and Warner Baxter, is screened. Reported to be a romance filled with unrestrained gaiety and sparkling wit, the new film finds the lovely Loretta Young teamed with Warner Baxter. The .story concerns tself with the hilarious misunderstandings which result when a lovely wife, who has loads of money, a beautiful home and a grand husband, decides that she wants one thing more, a career as a singer. The film is based on a novel by James M. Cain, famous novelist who wrote such best-sellers as “The Postman Always tings Twice’’ and “Serenade," and is cay comedy set against a modern background of delightful music. REGENT THEATRE “Out West Willi Ihe Hardys’’ brings back the popular Hardy family in one of their most entertaining adventures. To help their ranching friends in a legal dispute about water rights, the Hardys go out West to save tlie situation and restore happiness to tiie ranchers. The story is full of entertaining incidents, best of which are those which show little Virginia Weidler, the ranch foreman’s daughter, calmly doing everything Western that cocky Mickey Rooney (Andy Hardy) tries to do, about ten times as well as he does it. This treatment, which eventually cures Andy of a swollen head, provides plenty of amusement, but there are serious moments, too. “THE GREAT WALTZ” The lovely melodics of Strauss are heard in “The Great Waltz,” which will he screened tomorrow. Miliza Korjus, who takes the feminine lead, is said to he a very fine singer. STATE THEATRE A girl's revenge for the murder of her brother and its sensational effect on an instrumental espionage plot against the United States, form the basis of "They Made Her a Spy,” featuring Sally Eilers and Allan Lane. With its background laid in official Washington, the story presents Miss Eilers as the sister of an army lieutenant. When the latter is killed during his demonstration of a new field gun, the military intelligence department uncovers foreign sabotage behind the “accident.” In “Winner Take All” Tony Martin plays a Montana cowboy who turns pugilist, and Gloria Stuart is seen as the charming girl sports reporter who falls in love with him, and becomes his manager. Henry Armetta is at his best as Papa Gambini, and a great cast, including Slim Summerville and Kane Richmond, completes the linoup. THEATRE ROYAL Loyalty is the powerful theme of ‘‘Gangster’s Boy,” starring Jackie Cooper. It is the story of the high school generation, and of two friends, who planned, worked and dreamed together about going to West Point. Jackie Cooper is Larry Kelly, honour man and star athlete of the Andrew Jackson High School, who knows little about bis idol, his father, except that he is a wealthy man. Tommy Wonder is Bill Davis, whom Larry has pulled through classes and examinations until they both receive West Point appointments. Bill is the eon of straight-laced, blue-blooded Judge Davis, leader in the town of Mill'ord. With two splendid romantic leads (Leila Hyams and Roger Pryor), a sextette "of funsters, plenty of romance and dramatic incidents, “1000 Dollars a Minute” is based on Everett Freeman’s famous “Saturday Evening Post” story, which had everyone laughing when it appeared last year ROXY THEATRE The Spanish civil war forms the background of the tempestuous love story which is told in “Blockade,” a thrilling romantic drama which stars Madeleine Carroll and Henry Fonda. This is the romance of a man and a girl drawn into the contlict almost against their will—lovers who were at the same time bitter enemies. “Holiday,” with Katherine Hepburn as Linda Seton and Cary Grant as Johnny Case, is the story of modern youth "challenging an older generation. The youth is perfectly willing to work hard at his career, but only until such time as his career has reached the stage where he can retire.
