Malfroy (New Zealand) was defeated in the third round of the men’s singles of the British lawn tennis championships at Wimbledon by R. L. Riggs, the leading player in the United States. In the ilirst round of the combined doubles two New Zealanders and their partners wefe successful. Results were as follows: Men’s Singles Third round: R. L. Riggs (United Stales; defeated >C. E. Malfroy (New Zealand), B—’6, 11 —9, 6—2; E. Smith (United States) defeated Gjenar (‘Czechoslovakia), G —3, G—2, 5—7, I—G, G —l; i’. Puncec (Yugoslavia) defeated McPhail, o—3, G—3, 7—5; J. Brugnon (France) defeated L. Stefani (Italy), G—4, G—4, G—B, 6—4; H. Henkel (Germany) defeated L. Shafli ('Britain), G—4, 4—6, G—4, 6—l. Women’s Doubles 'First round: Mrs Hammersley and Miss K. Stammers (Britain) defeated Mile. Jedrzejowska (Poland) and Mme. Mathieu (.'France), 6—3, 6—l. Combined Doubles First round: G. E. Malfroy (New Zealand) and Miss B. Nuthall (Britain) defeated Sziget and Mile. Somogyi, G—4, G —'2; 'A. I). Brown (New Zealand, and Miss Thomas defeated Siba and Mrs Pittman. G—3, G—3 ; Ellmer and Mile. Weiwcrs defeated N. V. Edwards (New Zealand; and Miss Jarvis, G—l, 3 —6, 6—4; Geelhand and Madame Meulemeester defeated D. C. Coombe (New Zealand.) and Mrs M. R. King ('Britain), 6—4, 3—6, 9 —7.
