GALENTO’S DEFEAT

LOUIS NOT HURT OPINIONS OF CRITICS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) NEW YORK. June 28 Boxing critics agree that Galento fought a courageous fight, and against any other opponent than the steely* nerved, lightning-fast Louis, he would probably have won. As hard as Galento hit the champion, he was not able to hurt him sufficiently although he slowed him up momentarily several times. The referee undoubtedly saved the challenger from serious injury by stopping the fight. Louis has been floored only four times in his career, and no one had previously knocked Galento off his feet. Tony’s Hopes Ended A boxing writer says: “When the champion arose in the third round from the canvas and managed to stave off Galento’s rush for the rest of the round, Tony’s hopes came to an end. “At this point Galento was within one punch of the world heavy-weight championship, and had he been able to land one solid blow when the 'tan terror' arose from the floor, and had lie been able to charge in and connect with Louis in the latter's dazed condition, he would have brought a climax to one of the most amazing rises the boxing ring has ever seen. However, he just did not have ‘what it takes.' ’’ Galento said: “I had to get careless and let Louis stop me.”
