Twenty Maoris of the district enlisted together and a platoon has been established, which it is hoped will be controlled by native non-commissioned officers and officers. "This call of the nation has been nobly answered by these Maori people,” said tlie Hastings recruiting officer. Mr 11. McKay, to-day. "Their example is one that is well worthy of emulation." When the Maoris have been mediirally examined and passed, and have laken the oath of allegiance, they will be fitted with uniforms. It is expected that this will be in about a month's time.
