THE BRITISH ARMY

INCREASE IN RECRUITING BIG PROPORTION FIT (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, June 15 The total strength of the Territorial Army is approximately 406,000 officers and men. Recruiting for the doubling of tlie Territorial Field Array during the fortnight ended June 10 brought in 5529 recruits. The total potential strength of the Territorial Army Field Force on June 10 was 288,579, and the potential increase since April 1 has been 158,449. The total number of persons who joined the regular reserve and auxiliary forces in the last three months is approximately 236,000. Of 17,856 men examined medically between June 8 and 12 under the the Compulsory Military Training Act, 15,081, or 84.5 per cent., were classed as definitely fit for training. Commenting on these figures, in their bearing on the results of postwar developments in the nation's health services, Mr R. H. Bernavs, M.P., speaking at Edinburgh, said that they were encouraging, and represented a great improvement since the medical examinations of wartime recruits 2 5 years ago, when the numbers placed in No. 3 category so disturbed the conscience of the nation. The post-war expenditure on social services, Mr Bernays declared, great though it had been, was abundantly justifying itself.
