ANNUAL CONFERENCES OPEN ELECTION OF OFFICERS (By Telegrann.—Press Association) PALMERSTON N., Thursday At the annual meeting- of the New Zealand Dairy Breeders’ Federation, Mr J. Parlane, 'Christchurch, was reelected president and Mr J. H. Allan, (Hatuina, vice-president. Owing to the healthy state of the finances it was decided to call up only half the annual subscriptions of alliliated bodies. The New Zealand Hereford cattle breeders recorded a satisfactory year at their annual meeting. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr R. Hutchinson, Gisborne; treasurer, Mr E. E. Short, Cheltenham; council, Messrs E. Jefferson, Wairoa, \V. K. Morton, Silverhope, D. Tynan, Waitomo, W. B. White, Takapau.
The 'Red Poll Breeders elected the following officers: Patron, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes; president, Mr G. R. Forster-Pratt, Palmerston North; vicepresidents, Messrs J. Donaldson, Stirling, Otago, and W. Least, Hamilton; council, Messrs L. C. and G. Anderson, Wanganui, J. M. Campbell, Feilding, J. Donaldson, Forster-Pratt, J. W. Harding, Leask, G. McLeod, L. J. Wild, Feilding, 11. Wilson, Wanganui, M. Fleming, Stirling, Otago, Huntly, C. H. Methell, North Canterbury; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr L. T. Wild.
Almost a century and a half ig) in the mountains of North Carolina. U.S.A., John Morris kindled a fire in his hearth, and, since fires were hard to start with Hint and tinder, he kept it burning. Sentiment grew around the custom, and each succeeding generation took over the task of keeping the fire going. William Morris, great-grandson of John and his last survivor, carries on the tradition.
