TWO YEARS IN BORSTAL
FALSE PRETENCES CHARGES FARM LABOURER BEFORE COURT A sentence of two years’ defenfion in a Borstal institution was imposed on Robert Hyndman Brown, a farm labourer, of Waharoa, when he appeared before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Hamilton, to-day on one charge of theft and two charges of false pretences. Brown admitted the offence. Accused was charged that on June 13 at Gordon he stole a cheque book from Gordon Standish Bayly, valued at 3s; that on the same day at Te Aroha he obtained from Kenneth Gordon Grattan goods and money valued at £lO by means of a false cheque drawn on the Bank of New Zealand. Auckland; and that at Manawaru on June 13 he obtained goods and money to the value of £lO from Iris Mavis Peatson by means of a false cheque drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Auckland. Senior-Sergeant G. H. Lambert said accused was arrested in Te Aroha. A statement was produced in which lie admitted going into Bayley’s house and taking the cheque book. Later he filled in cheques and purchased clolhing, receiving change from the cheques. Accused had been before the court before, said Senior-Sergeant Lambert. The determination with which the offences were committed made Ihe case a serious one, for, after having had one of the cheques returned to him. Brown took i| to another shop.
On the first charge accused was convicted and discharged, and on the other two counts he was sentenced to two years’ detention in a Borstal institution. The sum of £7 is 3d. which was found on accused when In' was arrested, was ordered to he divided equally between the owners.
