TWO TAXI-DRIVERS IN COURT PEDESTRIAN CROSSING OFFENCES A fine of £5 and costs was imposed on Thomas Coleman Jary. taxi-driver, of St. IlPlier's Ray. Auckland (Mr A. L. Tompkins) when he was charged before Mr S. L. Paterson. S.M., in the Magistrate's Court. Hamilton, to-day with negligent driving in Victoria Street and with failing to give way at a pedestrian crossing. Th° first charge was not proceeded with and accused pleaded guilty to the second. On March It. said Senior-Sergeant Lambert, accused's vehicle struck a woman while she was on ttie pedestrian crossing near Garden Place. The woman, who was seriously Injured, was admitted to the Waikato Hospital and one of the witnesses to the accident stated that Jarv was not looking .where he was going. At ttie time of the accident the road was wet as the result of rain and visibility was bad. said Mr Tompkins. Three people were passing over the crossing at the time and two of them I stopped at the centre near the stani dards. However, the woman, who was I wearing a black coat, went on and [was struck hv the vehicle. Jary could not sec her but he was coiner slowly at the time and stopped within two feet. ! A similar charge was preferred [against a Hamilton taxi-driver. Alfred Parkinson, who failed to g’ve wav to people on the pedestrian crossing near Wesley Chambers.
Traffic-Inspector E. Innes-jones said that Parkinson was driving along Victoria Street and failed to give way when the people were on the crossing. However. Parkinson had always been regarded as a pood driver and had not given trouble previously.
Parkinson said he had always endeavoured to co-operate with the authorities and the offenee with which lie was charged was not deliberate. “Usually T impose a fine of not less than £5 for this class nf offence.*'
said Mr Paterson. However, as the traffic-inspector has given you a good name as a driver, juu will be fined only £2 108.”
