ATTEMPT ON SAFE
WHATAWHATA BURGLARY FUSE FAILS TO IGNITE An unsuccessful attempt to blow open the safe at the Whalawhata Post Office was made some time last evening, but the gelignite failed to explode and the Intruders secured nothing of value. Entry was gained by the breaking of a pane of glass in a back window, and unlatching the lock. A fuse, attached to a detonator, had been lighted but it had apparently gone out again as this morning the fuse was charred and the detonator and gelignite were still in the Jock of the safe. The Whatawhata Post Office has been burgled on numerous occasions, and about 12 months ago the safe was forced twice within a month. Over the past six or seven years it has been broken into nearly a dozen times.
On most occasions the burglaries occur just after the 20th of a month, the intruders apparently hoping to secure pension money. It is the practice in the Hamilton postal district not to leave money in the safes over-night and this morning the money to pay the pensions in the Whatawhata district was taken out by car. The money that is not collected is brought back to the main office and taken out again next day. This practice is followed at all small post offices where adequate strong rooms are not available.
Detective A. J. White, of Hamilton, is investigating the attempt.
