At the Magnetic Observatory in Ihe city the figure was 30.601in. at 0 a.in..' and it was the same two hours later, when it began to fall slightly. The lowest reading ever registered in Canterbury was 28.3'57in.. on the morning of January 1C of this year during a strong north-west gale.
