NEW TRACTORS
GREAT CARE NEEDED I The owner of a new tractor is alr ways well advised not to over-drive j the outfit during the first 40 or 50 hours; that is, during the first part of the running-in period. The usual working speed should never be attained. The speed should be kept down to about one-half of the normal. It is not advisable to maintain the same speed all the time. The speed given should be taken to be the maximum, but at times it should be slightly less, for an irregular speed allows the bearings to be run in under actual road, or land working conditions. After the first 50 hours the maximum speed may be increased, say, to two-thirds of normal, and then after another 30 or 40 hours it may be Increased to that recomm'ended by the makers. It should be remembered that the speed mentioned refers to top gear work. When a lower gear is employed, the speed should be considerably lower, because it is really the speed of the engine and not the outfit itself which matters. A safe rule to make is that during the first part of the running-in period the throttle is never opened more than one-half, and only slightly more so during the second stage.
