AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MEETING AT PAEROA SPARKLING HURDLING EXHIBITION j ! SHARPLEY AND JOYES IN FORM (By “Nurmi”) In celebration of Fitness Week the Paeroa Amateur Athletic and • Gycle Club held a most successful : open sports carnival on the Paeroa , Domain last Saturday. Competitions were numerous and included such J class performers as P. F. Sharpley i Hawkes Bay—Poverty Bay), holder of 120 yards and 220 yards New Zca- | land records, M. G. Baker, Auckland and New Zealand 440 champion, R. ! B. Joves, Waikato and Auckland ! hurdles champion, A. E. Graham, Wai- j kato and Auckland shot putt cham- * pion, K. D. Gillespie, Auckland javelin champion, J. Ferguson, Auckland j pole vault champion, and practically the entire list of winners at the Wai- j kato championships the previous • week. Most of the athletes mention- i ed were using the day as a final full- j bore workout prior to the Auckland j championships, to be held to-day and i the result was that spectators saw athletics at its very best. Irwin’s Convincing Display The Waikato half and mile champion, L. D. Irwin, turned in a most, attractive performance to win the B*o J yards handicap off 20yds in 1 min. 58 i i secs. He went a fast first quarter and j | thereafter had the race won. although j I Devcich (Thames), 35yds. led liaffi way down the straight. Irwin goes io ! Auckland to-day to compete in the I 880 title event, and on recent show- | ings his prospects are indeed rosy. Polo Vaulters Excel A feature of the day’s sport was ! 1 the great height achieved in the pole I, vault. Three competitors cleared 10 1 * feet, with J. Alker Hamilton doing 10ft 6in. The Hamilton trio, of ' Bradey, Ferguson and Alker look like j • monopolising the places in to-day's I ( title contest but the final order is j ‘ very difficult to pick. Bradey lias j 1 shown good form in the last four * weeks. Ferguson has been most incon- I * 6istent but is the “goods' and there- *

'ore liable to strike his best form a •■ny moment, while Alker’s recen showing only clouds the issue further in any case the winner will need t< go high. Cyclist Reprimanded At the last Waikato sub-centre meeting the matter of competitors j appearing in any other than their corj rect club colours was discussed, anc i it was decided that in future all competitors must comply with the rules regarding this. The first competitoi ATHLETIC CALENDAR (By “Nurmr) FEB. 25. AUCKLAND CHAMPS at Auckland. ' MARCH 4.—FOURTH WAIKATOS at ! Steele Park. APRIL 10.— (Easter Monday), TAU- < RANGA and TAUMARUNUI. APRIL 15.—KAIPAKI. to feel the effect of the tightening of this rule was the Hamilton sports club's promising rider, J. Ro-gerson. I Rogerson had ridden earlier in the day in his proper colours and. following an event, had put on a football jersey in order to keep warm. Unfortunately for him. he omitted to remove the jersey when winning the final of the two miles junior cycle handicap. On this occasion tlie cycling referee was lenient and the offender escaped with a caution, hut the publicity given the matter should have the effeefthe subcentre desires. Thames Open Meeting The Thames club are holding their annual open meeting at the - High School grounds. Thames, on April 1. Owing to the authorities not allowing cycling on .the ground, these events must be unwillingly deleted. However, to make up for the absence of cycling! the Thames club are doing everything possible to build up an entertaining

t i programme by securing visiting t . athletes in large numbers from Auck- . j land and Waikato clubs. » j | Fourth Waikatos * The annual sports gathering and reunion of the descendants of the 4th Waikato Regiment is to take place at Steele Park next Saturday. Entries close to-day with Mr R. Hill or Mr L. Jenkins. An event on the programme, not usually conducted at open meetings, is the hammer throw and with tlie Waikato and Auckland champion G. Tait ai.d the ex-champion A. E. Sutton, competing, together with a dozen or so lesser lights, the throw- ! ing should be high-class. Te Awamutu Re-entries Intending competitors at the Te I Awamutu mooting postponed from Anniversary Day) are reminded that ! further entries will be accepted by Mr A. B. Allen, Brady Street, Te Awa- | mutu, not later than Friday. March 3, j j at 12 noon. Entry fees must accompany the entrance form and no entries J will be accepted by either of the | handicappers. Floodlight Meeting Hamilton produced its first sports carnival under lloodlight conditions on Wednesday, when over 3000 people attended Hinemoa Park in celebration of Fitness Week. Judged on the success of the gathering and the complimentary remarks on the lighting, it would appear that the Domain Board might well consider this as an addi- j tional feature of the contemplated modern sports arena. Te Kultl Active j The Te Kuiti club, probably one I of tlie most ambitious organisations in , the game to-day, are well on the job with arrangements for their Easter Saturday meeting. In addition to the full programme of track, field and j cycle events, there will be the following:— cohort limit invitation mile handicap, consolation sprints handicaps, full programme of ladies' track and field events, invitation scratch cycle race of 14 miles, 50 miles, Hamilton to Te Kuiti Road Race, amateur wrestling in first-class ring. Maori hak&s, mod* 1 aeropl in< and gymnastic displays. It will be observed that the Te Kuiti club are leaving no stone unttlrned to make a success of their annual gathering. Hamilton Defeat Ellerslie In a special challenge relay race at the Paeroa meeting, the Hamilton*' quartette, R. R. Joyes, T. M. Roper. ' C. G. Goosruan and A. J. Denz, hold- 1

ers of the Auckland teams relay title over 4 x 110 yards, defeated the Ellerslie team, runners-up in the title contest. In the first attempt at Paeroa Hamilton dropped the baton. Jn the re-run, later in the day, the Ellerslie team changed the order of their running and Dovell commenced with Joyes. The changeover between Joyes and Roper was brilliant but the baton changing of the later Hamilton men did not compare favourably with Ellerslic’s work. Denz recorded one of the best runs of his career by con- ' ceding J. McManus two yards start | and beating him by a yard. When .they passed “Nurmi” with fifty yards Ito go the odds were, figuratively speaking, ten to one against Hamilton, j but Denz unwound a grand finishing effort to pull the match out of the * fire. • S. B. Carter Transferred The present Waikato hop step and I jump champion and a real topnotcher < 1” broad jump, hop step and jump and ! javelin throw, will be lost to the Hamj ilton club when S. B. Carter departs j next week for Opotiki. “sam” was formerly one of the stalwarts of the old Cambr dge club and when It ceased to function he joined Hamilton. The local club's loss will be Opotiki s gain and athletes everywhere will join with “Nurmi” in wishing him farewell and good fortune in his new sphere of activities.
