“ALWAYS A NIGHTMARE”
BLUE BLIP ON RAILWAY MINISTER PLANS INSPECTION (Bv Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday “ The Job has been a brain-puzzler for the engineers ever since they struck it.” said the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, 'referring this morning to the discovery that the blue slip on the South Island Main Trunk railway, 40 miles from Kaikoura, has shown further signs of movement. “ We had an idea that the' movement was exhausted and that 'the difficult side of that job was Over.” Mr Semple added, “ but these new iridicati ns that more country is coming away are giving us some concern. I propose to go and have a look at it as soon as I can with the chief engineer. Mr John Wood, and see what remedial steps we can take to prevent the movement from continuing. For the moment I cannot say a great deal, as I have not seen the new development, which is another stage in a phase that has always been a nightmare.” One of the great troubles was that a deviation could not be undertaken. Mr Semple stated. If the slip could have been dodged they would have done so long ago.
