COSTLY DELAYS
RAW MATERIAL IMPORTB MANUFACTURERS COMPLAIN (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Monday Complaints concerning the treatment so far received under the Import regulations was expressed by a number of Wellington manufacturers whose opinions were sought to-day. It was stated that, in spite of the statement made to the importers* conference by the Minister of Finance and Customs, the Hon. W. Nash, a number of importers had not yet received their licenses for the first half of the current year. In many cases manufacturers have had their raw material requirements reduced considerably, and in several instances even the quantities imported last year have been reduced. “This seems rather curious in view of the Government’s requests to ‘New Zealand manufacturers to increase production,” said one manufacturer. “We have every faith in Mr Nash's assurance that the importation of raw materials will be facilitated, but the long delay involved in the present procedure is becoming serious, particularly in the case of firms engaged in the production of seasonal goods. “Not having been given permission to import as much raw material as we require, we simply have had to lodge an appeal, and, although we believe this appeal will be successful, we have already lost a valuable part of the season and have no knowledge of how much longer it will be before the appeals will be dealt with.”
