RACING AT ELLERSLIE

WELL-BALANCED FIELDS

THE TAKAPUNA CUP

TWENTY HORSES ENGAGED REVIEW OF THE PROSPECTS (By “Martian”) Well-balanced fields are a feature of the opening day, to-morrow, of the Auckland Racing Club’s mid-summer meeting, the fine acceptance list of 20 runners being engaged in the £BOO Takapuna Cup. All other events have filled correspondingly well and indications are for a highly successful meeting. Betting will be under the single pool system. Following are the fields with a review of the prospects:—

Silver Glow, a useful performer last season, is a likely improver with prospects, while Midland, who ran well in maiden class at Te Rapa early in the season and who has been showing recent promise on the track, is expected to make a bold showing in the class. Odtaa ran prominently at Ellerslie in November when he accounted for all but Kenneth Robert in the Melrose Maiden. Fit and well on the day He may prove the hardest to dispose of. Kaspian disclosed good form over the holidays and is entitled to every respect, while Pasture will need only to reproduce track promise to possess a chance. Perillus has been in the money and other likely sorts include Ventre a Terre, Bronze Moth, Gamos, First Gold Money and Rey Lu. It should be an interesting race with preference. likely to be extended— KASPIAN ODTAA GAMOS 12.49

Taillight Is & useful performer over the obstacles. Lap Up has been off the scene for a spell and will have to be taken on trust. Tutor is preferred, his second to Stansted in the Ponsonby Hurdles at Christmas holding promise of better things. Queen Lu won impressively at Thames and as she has been working well in the interim she is sure to command a following. Electric Flash is a prospect but Aramis may hold her safe. He has been working and schooling in dashing style at Ellerslie of late and should strip in solid order on the day. Baldric, too, has been shaping well in recent essays, while Ngakaru looks the best of the others. The public may sum up foi tb« chancps of— QUEEN LU ARAMIS , TUTOR

The Stratford holiday form oi Corato over five furlongs was impressive and the Oration three-year-old may prove difficult to beat for all his 9.4. N'oitaro has been racing consistently, but somewhat unluckily of late and go well, while Hunt* Ingmore, Ohmaha and Penzance are a trio of likely improvers who should add interest to the contest. Silver Eagle won nicely at Thames and should give a further forward ac- | count of himself. Orvvere is capable ! of improvement on Thames running and other likely sorts comprise British Banner, Trevace and Brilliant Acre, who has been working well at Takapini. Hifrh Delight showed a return to winning form at the recent Thames fixture. In a good betting race favouritism may be disputed by— GORATO ‘ » HIGH DELIGHT N'OITARO 2.24

Round l*p. winner of the A.R.C. Handicap, has been working well over the past week and should lack nothing on the score of condition. Valamito shaped brilliantly in the final trials at Takanini yesterday and will advance in favour as a result. Malagigi appears to be on the upgrade, while Respectful. on his winning holiday form, is assured of solid support. He scored in most attractive manner over a mile *»n the last day at Auckland and gave 'the impression that to-morrow’s extra distance should not prove beyond him. Hot B« x is a strong possibility, although he failed on either day at Thames. Whirling is handily placed, but Dark Shadow reads the better proposition. He was a creditable third on the last day at Auckland early this month and has been shaping well in the interim. Further down the list are likely light-weights in De Friend and Golden Sheila. The former shaped particularly well yesterday in the final trials and on the way she was finishing on at Thames

Golden Sheila appears to be coming back to her best. Of the balance the best may be Gay Rose and Day Wind. The elect may be — VALAMITO RESPECTFUL DARK SHADOW

uur jean . . / y toeiaimiy . . . • » Several useful juveniles are engaged in the Calliope Handicap. Anoj pheles is a speedy type, while Classic, who worked well yesterday, has winning form to commend his claims. (Hen Connell is a likely improver and Wapaugh, who ran a fine second to Kakarere in the Waipa Plate at Te Rapa last month, will have to be conceded an excellent chance. Our Jean is a possibility and will need only to reproduce her track trials to take a power of beating. La Vie, a winner at the Auckland Christmas meeting, worked attractively in the fTnal trials while of the others the pick may be Gay Movie and Foxtoon. There should be good support forthcoming for —

Advance Acre 8 5 Pocket Venus 7 7 Balinavar has been racing with a consistency this term that draws attention to his claims and he is sure to go well. Aero King is a likely improver, but Brazilian should account for him. He has won at his last three starts and those successes have been achieved in solid style. Torch, fit and well, would have a chance and Romani has shown sufficient form to assure him a following. Full Hand was third to Poland and Melvanui the last day of the Ellerslie Summer carnival and any improvement on that form would give him good prospects. Bronze Step looks well, while of the others the best may be Gamos, who shaped encouragingly at Thames — BRAZILIAN BALINAVAR BRONZE STEP

Jack Tar ..77 Arvakur ... 7 0 Orate would need only to produce his best to have an excellent chance. Suleiman has been off the scene for a spell, but produced at his best would be the hardest to dispose of. Marie's Acre and Royal Bachelor have the credentials to command respect and Jack Tar is handily placed to give of his best. Paso Robles is a possibility but better prospects would appear to be Rulette and Mon Acre, the sprint winners at the recent Thames gathering. Yesterday the former shaped well at Ellerslie and promises to strip in splendid fettle. Anion and Arvakur, who will he coupled on the machine, should add interest to the issue, which may bp summed up in favour of — RULETTE MON ACRE ORATE

5.24 Melvanui’c second to Poland on the last day at Auckland was a commendable effort. Loomblnation’s last success was over hurdles at the Waipa meeting here. Eastern Heir appeals over Ringshot and Gay Rebel. Master Appellant, runner-up to Miss Appellant and Inquisitor in the Waitemata Handicap (1± miles) at Ellerslie last month, should not lack a strong following, while British Banner and Captain Bruce should , claim their full measure of support. Bronze Step, if reserved, will have to be considered It is an open race with preference likely to be extended— EASTERN HEIR MELVANUI MASTER APPELLANT
