PECULIAR MISHAP
BALVAQING A STEAMER EXPLOSION IN THE HULL (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) MELBOURNE, Jan. 25 Hopes of raising this week the steamer Kakariki, which sank in the Port Phillip fairway two years ago after a collision, were postponed by a curious mishap to-day. The Kakariki, only the funnel and masts of which are showing above the water, was ready for raising last Friday after six months’ work under water patching and pumping. When petrol was being poured to a pumping engine inside the ship it took fire, and for an hour the funnel-top spouted flames and smoke. There will be a further delay while the engine is removed through the funnel for repairs.
