HAMILTON REGATTA

BIG RIVER CARNIVAL 20 ENTRIES FOR SWIIVIMINO % ATTRACTIVE ROWING TALENT One of the highlights of the Hamilton regatta which will be staged on the Waikato River on Monday next will be the big river race to be contested over two miles for the handsome Goldie-Anderson Cup. The race will be the first of its kind held at the Hamilton regatta. Excellent entries have befcn received for the event which will be run under the auspices of the South Auckland Rowing Centre. The entries for the big swim are as follows: James Ball, Jack Ball (Y.M.C.A.) ; W. Martin, J. Kenning, K. Webster, A Smith, F. Haughey (Hamilton) ; A Lichfield, J. Ashton, W. Gibbons (Ponsonby); V. Capper (Waitemata) ; L. M. Caplin (Parnell) ; Miss Margaret Craney (Waitemata) ; S. Watts, R Aitken, S. Hamilton, S. Gifford. R. Clarke Morrinsville); S. Hewitson (Y.M.C.A.) ; H. Hall (Otahuhu). The swim will be contested downstream, and included among the entries are some of the leading distance swimmers of the province. New Zealand Champions Here Another highlight of an attractive programme will be the senior fours rowing event, which will bring the New Zealand champion crew, Clifton, of Waitara, on to the Waikato River for the second successive year. The Star Boating Club Wellington) has entered its crew for the big race of the day also, and although it was defeated at Wanganui last week by the Clifton combination it should add a great deal of colour to the event. All of the rowing races will bring a thrill to the public for all the crews which have entered are well up to regatta standard. Contests are likely to be extremely keen and a fine day's sport for the spectators is assured.

It will be a picturesque sight to see so many crews in action and one of the outstanding sights from a public point of view will be the maiden eights. Six crews will take the water In this event, a great field for the eights. It means that 48 oarsmen will be on the river at one time, and when the pace is on over the final stretch of water the public should see one of the greatest thrills ever seen at a water carnival in Hamilton. From start to gunfire at the finish all the rowing events should be exciting, for increased prize-money has been allotted by the club this year and crews will be straining that last little bit to be in the money. Each race -will be described in a radio broadcast from launch to land, and the public will have little difficulty in following the events. A wide-range programme has been provided to hold the interest of all sections of the public, including speedboat events, life-saving, ambulance displays, Maori entertainment, and children’s events. If the jveather is fine it will be a great day for people from Hamilton, the Waikato, South Auckland and as far away as Auckland.
