TE RAPA TRACKS

ELLERSLIE PREPARATION

DARK BHADOW—MALAQIQI WORK ON THE PLOUGH (By “Martian”) With the grass tracks in their present firm state as a result of the line weather experienced of late the majority of this morning's work at Te Rapa was executed on the plough, although in a number of instances the course proper, about 45 feet out from the rails, was availed of. There was nothing of outstanding note recorded, the morning’s programme being a comparatively restricted one. On the plough, Whirling strode over a round under restraint, running the final six furlongs of his work in 1.21 2-5. He looks well and is to contest the Takapuna Cup on Saturday in which he is handily weighted at 7.6. Sergia (W. Thomson; 6trode freely over six furlongs in 1.20, running her initial half-mile in 53s and the five furlongs in 1.7. She did her work evenly throughout and evinced no signs of the soreness which has been troubling her of late. According to present intentions she is to contest the Cup on Saturday. Bryce Street (Mclnally), the may go through for the second day of the Auckland meeting, worked over about a mile and a-half on the plough being timed to negotiate his final round in 1.59. This member of the Carroll establishment is bearing a healthy appearance and has come through his holiday racing in splendid heart.

Dark Shadow Pleases Dark Shadow (McKenzie) and Malagigi (C. L. Goulsbro) were associated over a round, the former doing slightly the better at the end in 1.49. Dark Shadow looks all the better for racing at Ellerslie in the New Year and he should give a solid account of himself in the Takapuna Cup this week. Malagigi, too, is bearing an Improved appearance and he should show to advantage when called upon to race. Cheval de Volee and Fleur d’Or were companions over six furlongs, being timed to negotiate their final halfmile in 52 l-ss, a commendable effort. The Auckland Cup victor has been doing everything required of him of late and again impressed this morning. On the course proper Star Artist (McKenzie) strode over a round, under restraint, in 2.17, running her first five ! furlongs lazily in 1.16. The novices, Meadow (Gilmer) and Irish Belle (Mclnally) dashed over half-a-mile in 52 2-s*s, a useful effort for horses of their class. Midland (McLaughlin), assisted over the early part by a maiden by Acre from Senorita (Long), got to the end of six furlongs in 1.21, the first halfmile in 535. Midland is an acceptor for the Trial Stakes on the first day of the Auckland meeting and in the class engaged is not without prospects. Queen Lu Works Queen Lu (R. E. Thomson), surprise winner of the hurdle event on the first day at Thames, strode over a round, being assisted over the first three furlongs by Awhioxyhio. She ran her first six furlongs in 1.23 and finished full of running. Now that Queen Lu has struck winning form she will bear keeping in mind for pending engagements. On Saturday she is to contest the Orewa Hurdles at Ellerslie and will not lack an optimistic following. Sen Acre (Thomson) and a three-year-old by Colossus in Tutchen’s stable dashed over three furlongs in 40s. Bronze Step (McKenzie) and Philemup (Mclnally) ran six furlongs in 1.23, their first half-mile in 55$s. Bronze Step, who is a free mover, executed her work in pleasing style and should lack little -on the score of condition for racing at Ellerslie.
