CONDITIONS IN GERMANY
STATUS OF DR. GOEBBELS SERVICE FOR ALL GIRLS (United Press Assn.—Elec. TCI. Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 3 The Daily Mirror is persisting in the story of Dr. Goebbels’ domestic complications, and predicts that the Ministry of Propaganda will gradually pass to the control of the Foreign Ministry and that Dr. Goebbels will be reduced to the position of chief of the Nazi Party in Berlin. Herr Hitler, the paper says, is hesitant at present to deprive him of his Ministerial rights, fearing that it would precipitate a party crisis. BERLIN, Jan. 3 Every German girl must in future “serve the people” for a year. Hitherto only those engaged in certain occupations were liable for the labour service, but now the order has been extended to all unmarried girls under 25. The order will affect 300,000 or 400,000 girls annually. They may be employed in industry, agriculture or household work. Due to Labour Shortage The measure is due to the labour shortage, which is also leading to the compulsory closing down of small shops and unprofitable factories. All paper notes of the old Austrian schilling currency became worthless yesterday, says a message from Vienna. Silver coins worth only their intrinsic value, which is about a quarter of the nominal value. The banks are worked overtime exchanging them for the new currency, but many people have retained sets of 10 two-schilling coins, already worth over the nominal 20 schillings, bearing portraits of celebrities, including the late Chancellor Dolfuss.
