Round Up Prevails
A DECISIVE SUCCESS THIRD DAY’S RACING DEFAULTER WINS WELL The third day of the Auckland Racing Club’s carnival was held at Ellerslie yesterday under ideal weather conditions, Round Up winning the chief event in decisive style and Defaulter, at very cramped odds, taking the Great Northern Derby from Beaupartir and Peerless. Valspear surprised in the opening event to return over a quarter of a century, while La Vie and Respectful were both at double figure odds. Miss Appellant was lying behind Valspear as the field settled down but she soon ran to the front to lead along the bark and across the top from Gay Mimic, valspear, Erllck, Full Hand, Halle Boy and Hutana. Miss Appellant and Gay Mimic were on terms as the field straightened up for home and In the run to the judge Valspear won well by a length and a-quarter from Inquisitor with Miss Appellant a length away. Rozel, who on the first day hit the fence by the seven rurlong peg and put a seal on her chances, made amends on tbls occasion by following Slmlnt till a couple or rurlongs rrom home and then hitting the front to carry on and win with something in reserve. Slmlnt was showing out as they bad settled from Rozel, Little Briton and Pyrenees. Along the back Simlpt was out six lengths from Rozel with a couple of lengths to Stansted and Erination. Little Briton and Small Boy Tell here and Ktlberls lost his rider. Rozel was gradually moving up and she hit the front entering the straight to lead from Slmlnt, Stansted and Erination. Nothing had a chance with Rozel once the last fence negotiated and she carried on to win by five lengths rrom Stansted with three lengths to Slmlnt. Xatatoki lost a lot or ground at the start and Sir Lysander led out from Scandal, Heroic Maid and La Vie. Heroic Maid made tbe running across the top and Into tbe straight she was followed by Scandal, r Thurnavaals, La vie, Lady Fox and King Dazzle. La Vie did best In the run home to win a spectacular finish by hair a head from Heroic Maid, w-bo beat Lady Fox by a head. Dictate and Day Wind were prominent early, the pair leading along the back a couple or lengths out from Gay Rose and Round Up, with Cheval de Volee and Knight or Australia following and The Buzzer at the head or the others. Dictate moved up to assume command across the top and led into the straight rrom Knight of Australia and Round Up, with Day Wind handily placed in front or Cheval de Volee, Willie Win. It proved a stirring finish, vet in the very deciding stages Round Up, once he had collared Mazir, went right away to win by two and a-half lengths, with Arctic Ktng a length and a-hair awav. Land Girl galloped nearly a rurlong the opposite way just prior to the start and she was hopelessly lert as the tapes were released, Huntingrnore leading early from Romani, The Trimmer, Bronze Emerald and White Gold. Penzance was in charge at the half-mile and she led into the straight from Bronze Emerald and Pasture, but in a tight finish Lady Meath finished on to score from Penzance by a head with The Trimmer a neck away third. As they reached the straight Royal Bachelor was still setting the pace and, levelling up for home, was in charge with Palustre In close attendance and Golden Sheila and Mon Acre the handiest of the others. Palustre won in a tight finish with Anion by a bead, with Golden Sbeila a similar distance away. Paper Slipper was fourth and then came Royal Bachelor, Golden Blonde, Royal Dance and Llangollen. Lornacre was early in the lead from Whirling and Respectrul, Pirate King taking up the running shortly after to show out along the back and across the top from Surella. Lornacre hit the front at the straight entrance rrom Besiege and- Re spectful, and In a good finish Respectful came through to win by a neck rrom Lornacre, who beat Trench Fight by half-a-length. Surella was rourth and then followed Whirling, De Friend and Pirate King. Time, 1.25.
TOTALIBATOR INCREABE MACHINES UP £27,357 The totalisator yesterday handled £88,463 10s, compared with £67,805 on the. same day last year, an increase of £20,658 10s. Over the three days of the meeting the machines handled £260,457, as against £233,099 10s last season, an Increase of £27,357 10s.
