CUSTOMS DUTY RETURNS (By Telegram— Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday Customs returns for Christchurch show comparatively little alteration lor December or for the past nine months over the previous year’s totals. The December figures rose £5206, but for the nine-monthly period the amount fell £50,083. The principal increases in December duties were in beer duty and petrol and tyre tax, while sales tax and Customs showed the main drop for the longer period. The comparative figures for December were:—l937: Customs, £105,913; 1938, £100,282; beer, £13*899, £15,270; petrol, £31,783, £34,722; tyre tax, £IOO3, £1274; sales tax, £41,759, £42,263; light dues, £599, £394; export levies wool, £4O, £123; meat, £lO2, £62; miscellaneous, £241, £295; totals, £195,399, £200,605. For the past nine months the totals were:—l937: Customs, £963,157; 1938, £905,196; beer, £97,187, £104,497; petrol, £215,490, £232,665; tyre tax, £11,052, £9871; sales tax, £357,314, £338,443; light dues, £5487, £5206; export levies wool, £1707, £1502; meat, £5404, £8561; honey, £l3, £4l; miscellaneous, £607, £751; totals. £1,657,418, £1,606,733. AUCKLAND RETURNS SUBSTANTIAL INCREASES (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Saturday There were substantial increases in the customs revenue in Auckland during the year. The principal totals for 1938 are as follows, with the 1937 totals in parentheses:— Customs, £3,587,715 (£3,485,889); motor spirit, £877,305 (£790,589) ; tyre duty, £33,317 (£35,584); totals, £4,498,337 (£4,312,062). Excise on beer realised £214,285 (£193,408), and on sales tax £1,052,302 (£1,022,467).
