A sum of 15,000,000 dollars was spent in noisy celebrations. Night clubs and hotels, in spite of a cover charge of 15 dollars, sold out. Thirteen hundred policemen and I*2B mounted men sought to maintain order in Times Square and Broadway, which were crowded to excess, and 165 detectives were assigned to duty of escorting homeward bejewelled debutantes lest they should bo attacked by thugs.
