Sir Henry Hubert Ustler teas appoin’ed to the supreme Court Beuch in December, 1924, and in service is junior only to the Hon. Sir John Reed. Born in Canterbury in 1876, he was educated at Christ’s Hospital, London, and returning to New Zealand in 1892, he farmed for eight years in the Levin district. He entered practice as a barrister in Wellington, and in 1910 was appointed Crown Solicitor. In 1915 he Joined the Auckland firm of Jackson and Russell, with which he remained until his appointment to the Bencl). One of Sir Hubert's private interests has been big-game hunting. Sir Henry was also a Wellington representative Rugby footballer. He was chairman of the Victoria College Council and a member of the Senate of the University of New Zealand, and is a lifeinember of the Wellington and Auckland Acclimatisation Societies. Mrs C. K. W’ilson. of Kio Kio, member ol' the Waikato Hospital Board, is Sir Hubert’s sister. SIR CHARLES LUKE Sir Charles Manley Luke, who will be 82 in February, has a long record of public service. He was born at Penzance, Cornwall. In 1879, with his brother, the late Sir John Luke, he became a partner in the engineering firm of S. Luke and Sons, of Wellington, with which lie was actively connected until his retirement in 1913. in 18S5 he became a iruslee of the Wellington Hospital, sitting as a member of Hie board for nearly half a century. Mayor of Wellington in 1895, and" a member uf the Legislative Council from 1907 to 1914, in 1901 lie was appointed a member ol’ the Royal Commission set up to consider whether New Zealand should become a state of tlie new Commonwealth of Australia. Alexander Cochrane. C.B.E. (military), came to New Zealand In 1936 under engagement by the Government to report on problems of air defence. Ho has had a distinguished career in the Hoyal Air Force. In 1933 he gained the rank of wing-commander. Hit term of engagement in New Zealand was extended from six months to two years and he was promoted to ths rank of group-captain and also became Chief of the Air Staff. His term In New Zeaalnd expires early this year. MR A. T. DONNELLY Chairman of the Bank of New Zealand since April, 1937. Mr Arthur Telford Donnelly, C.M.G., of Christchuroh, is a leading member of th# Bar. He is best known for his distinguished service to New Zealand cricket. Mr Donnelly saw service in the Great War and In 1911 was appointed Crown Solicitor at Christchurch. In. 1998 he was elected chairman of the management committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council, and held that position until November, 1937. In the 1931-3* season he visited England, and, with Mr Arthur Sims, represented New Zealand at 'the Imperial Cricket Conference. Mr Donnelly was appointed a Government director of.the Bank of New Zealand in 1937, and Immediately succeeded Sir George Elliot as chairman. MR T. D H. HALL Mr Thomas Donald Horn HalL C.M.G., has been Clerk of the House of Representatives since 1930. Hs qualified in law at Victoria University College, and entered the Railway Department as a cadet in 1901, later being transferred to the Department of Agriculture. After service in the Great .War, he was appointed assistant law draftsman in 1921. and was admitted as a barrister in the following year. MR T. R. AICKIN Private secretary to the Minister of Finance, Mr T. R. Alckin, C.8.E., was born In’Cambridge, Waikato, In 1886, and Joined the Railway Department In 1901. In 1915 he went to the Ghent War with the First Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, attaining ths rank of captain. He was transferred from the Railway Department to th#

ALICE HORSLEY Dr. Alice Woodward Horsley, 0.8. E., is the eldest daughter of the late Mr William Woodward, of Cambridge, and Mrs Woodward. Dr. Woodward Horslev graduated from the Otago Medical School in 1900, being the third owman in New Zealand to take the degree of M. 8.. Ch.B. She hae practised since in Auckland. MR S. J. HARRISON General secretary of the New Zetland Returned Soldiers' Association, Mr S. J. Harrison, 0.8. E., was bom in Marton in 1893. He was appointed quartermaster-sergeant to the Fifteenth Reinforcements, which he accompanied overseas, and later was appointed quartermaster-sergeant to the Imperial troops sent to India. Illhealth caused him to be returned to New Zealand. He was awarded the Military Medal In 1921. Mr Harrison became assistant general secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Association, and in 1923 general secretary. MR A. W. MULLIGAN Mr A. W. Mulligan. C.8.E., was appointed in February last year to the position of general secretary of the Centennial branch of the Department of Internal Affairs. He Joined the Public Service in Dunedin in 1899 and in 1916 he was appointed private secretary to the Minister of Agriculture. Two years later he was transferred to the position of private secretary to the Minister of Lands, whtefe he held until last year. MR SAMUEL SALTZMAN Mr Samuel Sallzman. 0.8. E., of Dunedin, came Into prominence recent]v bv large benefactions to public institution* His gifts of this nature now total £15,000. MISS B. A. CAMPBELL Miss Beatrice A. Campbell, has been matron of tlie New Plymouth Public Hospital for the past 22 years. MISS 1. M. CORKILL Miss Isabel Mona Corkill. matron of tile Nurse Maud District Nursing Association, was born at New Plymouth and educated there. She was on the staff of the Queen Mary Hospital at Haunter Springs, and about 12 years ago was appointed Red Cross nurse for Taranaki. She was Health Department nurse In Taranaki and was appointed matron of the Nurse Maud Association In July, 1936.
