EASY VICTORY

HAWKE CUP RETAINED WAIKATO'S WIDE MARGIN GOING ROUTS MARLBOROUGH T. LYON AND BRIGHT IN FORM Down by 18 runs on the first innings, Waikato staged a recovery in the second innings and defeated Marlborough, challengers for the Hawke Cup, by eight wickets. Batting first, Marlborough were all out before lunch on Saturday for 141. Waikato failed badly when they replied with 123, the last* wicket falling just before the scheduled time for the conclusion of play on the first day. When the visitors went to the wickets again yesterday they managed only the meagre score of 96, leaving Waikato 114 to win and a day and a-half to bat. The home eleven reached its objective with two wickets down three-quarters of an hour before time yesterday. Throughout the two days the scoring was very poor and deadly slow, in spite of the perfect state of the wicket. The Waikato fielding was never brilliant and many runs were given away through faulty ground work, while several reasonably easy catches were dropped. On the other hand, Marlborough displayed keenness in the field and frequently earned the applause of the crowd for their clean handling. At times the play was interesting, especially when Waikato were struggling for runs at the end of their first innings. Again some shining batting was seen with Bright and T. Lyon together in the home side’s second innings, when the pair were carrying the side to victory and the southern team were attempting to break the partnership. Star Batsmen M. Lyon (25) and T. Lyon (36) started off well in Waikato’s second innings, but. apart from Aitken (20), the later batsmen failed to strike form. When Marlborough batted the second time Auty (38) was the only impressive player. In the second innings of the home team T. Lyon (61) and Bright (28) batted particularly well and took the side past their opponents’ total. Bowling for Waikato in the visitors’ second innings Going took six wickets for 26 runs. The teams were— Marlborough: H. Auty (captain), H. Bougen, A. Neal, G. Bonsall, C. O’Sullivan, D. Hastilow, S. Ross, N. Avery, G. Sowman, F. Cresswell, A. Cresswell. Waikato: R. Skeet, A. Lissette, A. J. Aitken, E. Everest, J. Everest, M. Lyon, T. Lyon, P. Bright, S. A. R. Badeley, R. Clough, H. Going. Auty and Bougen opened Marlborough’s second innings yesterday morning against the attack of T. Lyon and Clough. Bright missed an easy chance to throw down Auty’s wicket and soon after failed to get to a catch from the same batsman, and the p?ir took the tally to 10. However, Lyon’s fifth over brought success when Auty went leg before. 13 —I—2.

The visitors’ total was at 28 when Going relieved Clough at the pavilion end. A wicket soon came his way, Bougen playing back to a low ball and losing his leg stump. 31—2—13. Play had been in operation an hour.

When the total was at 43 Going claimed Bonsall’s wicket, the batsman coming out to a well-pitched ball and taking it on the pads. He had shown signs of making a useful stand. 43 —3. (Bright then took over the attack from Lyon, who had bowled 12 successive overs. The slow trundler tempted Hastilow, and he lifted the third ball over mid-off's head for the first six of the match, and 50 came on the board for 90 minutes’ play. His was an unexpected dismisal which dimmed Marlborough’s chances, llastilow sending an easy catch to Clougo at short leg. 51—4—7. Marlborough Slump Then the rot set in. Off the next ball of Going’s over the left-hander, O'Sullivan sent a catch right into Clough’s hands at point. 51—5—0. Going needed onp more wicket for the hat trick, but Ross was careful and played the following ball back to the bowler. However, in Bright’s second over he had his wicket broken. 52 6—l. The first four of the day came when Avery joined Neal, the former sending Bright high over E. Everest’s head to the leg boundary. Neal then opened out, and both batsmen tried to retrieve the position, Neal taking two fours off Going, but the bowler had him in the same over, T. Lyon taking a brilliant low catch in the slips. Avery, when accompanied by A. Cresswell, bit Bright for two fine fours between midoff and cover, taking the side past 70. At that stage Badeley relieved Bright at the railway end, and in his first over made a great but unsuccessful attempt to catch Cresswell. Avery, however, did not last. Going securing a legbefore decision against him. 77—8— li. Good Running Sowman and Cresswell were after every run and indulged in some clever and risky running, which was facilitated to a great degree by the poor Waikato fielding. Their successful partnership was cut short when Cresswell played back to a well-

pitched ball from Badeley and was bowled. 89—9 —1.

Chances of Marlborough reaching the century were not very bright when F. Cresswell and Sowman were together. Aitken fielded cleanly to throw down Sowman's wicket, and the side was out for 96.

Facing a deficit of 114, the Lyon brothers opened for Waikato. Both gave chances before lunch, when the total stood at live without loss. After the adjournment, the batting was pitifully slow. The field clustered around T. Lyon when he laced Neal, but he sent them back by hooking a ball to leg for four. Auty then tried changing the bowlers about, but the scoring only became faster, Ly° n landing a pair of fours over the line, and 30 was on the board. When he hit another boundary the total reached 40 aud Lyon's score passed 30. Partnership Broken Waikato had been batting 100 minutes when M. Lyon was run out. Ross had been tempting him with a variety of balls which troubled nim a little/ Then he sent the bowler to cover point, but Bonsall was too quick and accurate with his return. 45—1 —lO. J. Everest joined T. Lyon when the half-century was hoisted after 116 minutes, and the afternoon tea interval was then taken. At no time did Everest look comfortable, and when he played inside

one from Neal he was clean bowled. 67—2—14. Another four to Lyon put 70 on the board. Bright was partnering him at that stage, and looked very unsafe, his runs coming from lucky snicks behind the wicket. Lyon was playing good cricket, but just before reaching 50 he sent a hard chance to the bowler, F. Cresswell. The next delivery he swung to the line to complete his 50 runs. As the total approached 90 Bright got into his stride. Four byes and a brace by T. Lyon put 100 on the list. Another* four to T. Lyon, and he reached 60 and took the side to 107. Winning Hits Bright opened out to A. Creswell and lifted him for six to long-on, putting the teams on even terms. Another four to Bright off the same bowler placed Waikato ahead and retained for them the Hawke Cup. SATURDAY’S PLAY Marlborough’s innings occupied 170 minutes and jusfon 2.30 p.m. T. Lyon and M. Lyon opened for Waikato. A. Cresswell and F. Cresswell were in charge of the attack for the visitors, and in the former’s second over T. Lyon survived an appeal for a catch behind the stumps. However, he was undeterred by that and assisted materially in bringing 20 up in fairly good time. Forty was on the board with the Lyon brothers still together, and the half-century was reached in 66 minutes. T. Lyon was particularly aggressive, while his partner was steady. Marlborough attempted to break the partnership with constant bowling changes, but the pair were j still together at the afternoon tea adjournment. After the interval the Cresswell brothers changed ends and the move proved worth while, for A. Cresswell in th.e first over had T. Lyon caught in brilliant fashion by Bonsall at midoff. 67 —1—36. Lyon played a fine innings, his best for some time. A. Cresswell claimed the second victim, M. Lyon, who misjudged the ball, sending a catch to Neal, who accepted it neatly. 69 —2 — Jlo. With J. Everest and Bright together there was a likelihood of a recovery, but Everest, who at no time looked comfortable facing the fast attack, was nearly caught in the covers, and then in the slips, and finally Avery, who had relieved Hastilow behind the stumps, caught him. 80—3—9. Badeley Fails to Score No further runs had been added when Badeley, after receiving one ball, sent an easy catch to Bougen at point, and returned to the pavilion’ without scoring. 80—4—0. When Sowman relieved F. Cresswell at the railway end he accounted for Bright, who played half-hearfedly to a low ball and was clean bowled. 94 5 10. A brilliant catch above his head by Auty dismissed Lissette just after the batsman had opened his score. 99—■ 6 i. # The hundred came up when Clough notched a single. Clough and Aitken continued to bat aggressively and indications were that Waikato would overtake the Marlborough score. The unexpected happened and Aitken, who seemed quite confident, was bowled by Neal. 116—7—20. Going failed to open his account before Neal had him lbw, and Clough was out with the next ball, sending a hard catch back to the bowler, F. Cresswell. With nine wickets down for 1 i 6 there was no chance of Waikato catching their opponents unless Skeet or E. Everest could retrieve the position. The captain had chosen a place too low down in the batting to do any good, and Everest, although he did his best, could not make amends, and he went out with the total at 123, leaving Skeet unconquered.
