SEIZED WITH CRAMP

YOUNG MAORI DROWNED SKYLARKING IN THE WATER (Special to Times) ROTORUA, Saturday Hapeta Whata (22 , a Maori labourer, lost his life late yesterday afternoon as the result of being apparently seized by cramp while swimming at Otaramarae, Lake Rotoiti. A Maori girl who was rowing a boat nearby stated that Whata appeared to be skylarking in the water and attempted to race the boat. She turned to row back to the shore and heard him call out to her to come back but thinking he was still skylarking she took no notice. When she reached shore another native told her Whata was really in difficulties and she returned hut the man sank before she could reach him. The police later recovered Whata’s body in 20 feet of water.
