Fine Fields at Ellerslie

THE GREAT NORTHERN DERBY ATTRACTIONS IN OTHER CENTRES THE PROSPECTS REVIEWED (By “Martian”) - New Year holiday programmes will be observed throughout the Dominion on Monday, when the chief attractions as far as this district is concerned will be the Eiierslie and Stratford programmes, in which Waikato horses are freely represented. Meetings will also be staged by the Marton Jockey Club and Wyndham and Waikouaiti Racing Clubs while Monday will mark the conclusion of the Wairarapa, Greymouth and Hawke’s Bay meetings. Trotting enthusiasts will be catered for in the Canterbury Park meeting.

AUCKLAND CLUB WELL-BALANCED FIELDS ROUND UP FANCIED FOR CUP DEFAULTER LOOKS THS PART With fine fields carded throughout the third day of the Auckland Racing Club's summer carnival the club sTiould experience another successful day’s racing. The chief handicap event, the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, has attracted 1G runners, while in the Great Northern Derby a class field of nine three-year-olds should provide a thrilling encounter. Both the sprint and seven-furlong events have filled exceptionally well and fine betting fields should result. Following are the fields with a review of the prospects:—

Erlick will need to improve to make his presence felt, and there are others that will be preferred. Lady Meath has been working in attractive style since her arrival at Eiierslie and she should make a forward showing in this class. Inquisitor finished attractively on Wednesday to beat all but Miss Appellant, and on that showing he may prove one of the hardest to dispose of. Gay Mimic and Haile Boy are a pair of likely improvers, while the winning form of Miss Appellant on the second day of the carnival points to her showing to advantage again. Full Hand has prospects and other likely sorts include Devon, Ngakaru, Poland and Fleur d'Or. In a good betting raoe the public may sum up for the chances of MISS APPELLANT INQUISITOR LADY MEATH 12.48

For all his solid poundage Erination will claim a strong following. A dashing jumper he has not missed a place in his last seven starts. En Tour and Celtic Lad failed on opening day and will need to show improvement, and Small Boy may be a better proposition although he, too, will have to do better. Simint may be a better horse for his race on the first day, and other likely improvers are. Kilberis and Rozel. The latter was going great guns in the Grafton Hurdles till she struck a fence hard and lost her position. She will have her rhanre here to make amends. Te Rapa stables claim strong representation in Stansted. Mio Lume and Little Briton, and all three have the credentials to elaim a following. Stansted won well r»n the latter day and on his third in the Grafton Hurdles and subsequent attractive, track work Mio I.ume should make a hold showing. Chikara is the best of the others in a race in which the public may prefer MIO LUME STANSTED ROZEL

track work to take a lot of beating. There should be good support forthcoming for THURNAVAALS SCANDAL WYNDORA

Cheval de Volee ... 7 13 The forward showing of Round Up in the Auckland Cup points to him carrying solid support. Padishah arid Willie Win are strong possibilities and Mazir, at his best, would be fighting it out over the very deciding stages. The Buzzer may be seen to better advantage than was the case in the falselv-run Cup of Monday, while the same may also be said of Arctic King and Quadroon. The latter was right in the picture for over a mile and ahalf on Monday, and next week’s distance may be more to his liking. Master Brierly and Dictate are fit and well and should make a bold showing, while it will he interesting to see how the Cup victor, Cheval de Yolec, will fare

on this occasion if a truer pace is clapped on in the early stages of the running. It is not likely that he will be permitted to make his own rules again. Knight of Australia should account for more than beat him and he should account for the balance in a great betting race, in which the prime fancies may Include ROUND UP DICTATE QUADROON

The form of Beaupartir at the meeting to date has been most impressive and this attractive son of Beau Pere should make a solid bid for Derby honours. However, he will need to give of his very best to lower the colours of the brilliant Defaulter, who in winning thp Christmas Handicap in hollow fashion on the first day, registered his sixth successive success. He

will be at a “ Gloaming ” price on Monday. Gay Son, Hot Box and Old Bill will add interest to the issue, while Te Hero and Peerless are not without excellent prospects, the latter winning the New Zealand Oaks at Riccarton in November in impressive fashion. When the final figures are hoisted indications are the public will place most faith in DEFAULTER PEERLESS BEAUPARTIR

came with a big reputation and while he failed to show to advantage on the first day of the meeting lie may do better here. Cheval de Datable and Pern are likely improvers, while the encouraging form of Wapaugh in the Waipa Plate here* curler in the month would indicate that he may prove one of the hardest to beat. Esquire was left in bis first day engagement when Heroic Maid ran third behind Thurnavaals, who may be seen in winning form at the meeting. She will be all the better for that outing and makes strong appeal in the class offering. Further down the handicap is a likely sort in Wyndora. who during the week preceding the Auckland meeting hid been working attractively at Te Rapa. She will need only to reproduce her 1

Melvanui should have prospects and Lady Meath, if reserved, should go a solid race as she appears to he coming right back to her best. Huntingmore’s running in the Robinson Handicap on opening day suggested early retribution aiid indications arc lie will not lack

support. The Trimmer, 100. ran well on the first day, while White Hold’s Feilding form last month was good. She has splendid prospects here • pite her failure in the Robinson Handicap. Romani, Penzance, Silver Eagle and Golden Blonde are strong possibilities while of the others the host would appear to he Blonde Princess and Pasture. The favourites may be— HUNTINGMORE THE TRIMMER BLONDE PRINCESS

Paper Slipper will need to show improvement on his earlier running and Llangollen appeals more. She has the credentials to make full amends for her narrow defeat on the second day. Whirling and Royal Bachelor will be coupled on the machine and form a useful combination. Golden Sheila, at her best, would have to be considered and Mon Acre is a likely improver with a chance. Palustre won nicely the other day and is in form. Golden Blonde has prospects while further down are useful sprinters in Tepoto, Arvakur, Bachelor King, Te Monowai and Tonnerre. Luck in the running may not he without its bearing on the result hut form points to strong siupport being extended— LLANGOLLEN PALUSTRE WHIRLING-ROYAL BACHELOR

The open seven has attracted a fine field and Trench Fight will need only to produce his best to be difficult to beat. Whirling, if reserved, will have a strong following, and will be coupled on the machine with Royal Bachelor and Olympus. Marie’s Acre is a good . pro'spect and De Friend, winner of the | Plunket Handicap on the second day ! of the meeting, should again run proi minently. Entail’s third in the Christ- ' mas Handicap was an encouraging effort and he will not lack a following. Mon Acre, Golden Blonde and Surella, as in the case of Whirling, Marie’s Acre and Royal Bachelor are also entered for the sprint and in the absence | of knowledge of owners’ intentions it is difficult to indicate at this stage which race will be their mission. The elect of investors may be
