THE NEW YEAR SPEAKS

Good-morning sir! Good-morn-ing, ma'am! Good-morning to you all! I've just come from eternity To play a game of ball. As I peeped out of paradise The round earth I did see—- “ Oh, there’s a pretty toy,” I cried, “A pretty toy for me!” ’Twas painted gay as rainbows are, But mostly blue and green, And there were flowers and animals, And people in between. I couldn't wait to play with it, I clapped my hands for glee! The old Year turned and called out “ Catch ! ” And tossed the ball to me. And now I’ve got it for my own To play with as I will, I’ll bounce it up into .the sky, And bump it down the hill; I’ll spin it sometimes in the air, And sometimes let it fall— So hold on tight, you people, while : play my game of ball! —Eleanor Farjeon.
