SURVEYING OF LAND

WIRELESS SETS USED MESSAGES TO OBSERVERS Portable wireless transmitting sets are now being used for the first time in the world for geodetic triangulation work by field officers of the Lands and Survey Department. The triangulation survey is the basis of the land survey in the Dominion. The present geodetic triangulation takes into account the curvature of the earth and will eventually replace the numerous triangulation circuits now in use. The work is carried out at night with small lights, and as most of the stations from which observations are made are high and remote from any means of communication, the observers are finding radio of great assistance. The light-keepers are equipped with receivers, and by this means are given instructions as to the orientation of the light and its future movements. The saving of time as compared with the old method is stated to be considerable. The wireless sets, which have a range of about 150 liles, are being used by parties in the Marlborough, Nelson and North Canterbury districts. The results are regarded as very satisfactory.
