CRICKET HONOURS

HAWKE CUP AT STAKE WAIKATO’S STRONG ELEVEN MARLBOROUGH GAME TO-MORROW The Waikato cricket eleven will be called upon to-morrow to defend the Hawke Cup for the second time this season in a match against Marlborough at Seddon Park. The game is scheduled to-extend over three days and providing the weather holds there is every likelihood of it being played to a close finish as the Marlborough team is stated to be a strong one. Already the Waikato representatives have proved themselves a worthy combination, having registered an overwhelming win against Bay of Plenty, the first challengers for the cup. The same eleven is picked to defend the trophy to-morrow and a better balanced team would be hard to find. Most of the players have considerable experience behind them and fine records in both competition and representative cricket. The following are the respective teams:— Marlborough.—H. Auty (captain), D. Hastilow, A. Neal, G. Sowman, S. Ross, G. Bonsall, 11. Bougen, F. Cresswell, A. Cresswell, N. Avery and G. O'Sullivan. Waikato. —R. Skeet (captain), A. Lissette, H. Going. R. Clough, J. Everest, T. Lyon, M. Lyon, S. A. R. Badeley, A. J. Aitken, P. Bright, E. Everest, G. Hampton (twelfth mna).

Waikato captain and wicketkeeper. One of the main essentials of a representative team is a capable leader and T. Skeet has the credentials in that respect. As the side's wicketkeeper lie has proved his worth without doubt, while his batting leaves little to be desired. Occupying a position low down on the list he is a useful man for saving a batting collapse which he has done on more than one occasion. Good All-rounder A. Lissette is probably one of the best all-rounders in the Waikato and his past performances have proved that. He is another capable batsman who is low down on the list which only goes to prove that the Waikato eleven has not a weak “tail.” Two bowlers who have proved useful acquisitions to the Waikato team are Gointg and E. Everest. The latter took seven wickets for 15 runs off 10 overs against Bay of Plenty, while Going, although he did not have so much scope, secured two for live off six overs. R. Clough failed to strike batting form in the last match but made up for his failure by taking eight wickets for nine runs off nine overs in the Bay’s second innings. However, Clough may make amends in his batting to-morrow. Three reliable batsmen are possessed by Waikato in J. Everest, Aitken and Bright. Everest is a very stylish player and reliable. Aitken top-scored for Waikato with 85 not out against Bay of Plenty, his total being compiled at what appeared a very critical time. Bright is also a clever man with the bat, although he missed rather badly in the first cup match. Veteran Player S. A. R. Badeley, the veteran of the team, needs no introduction to followers of the game. Me is at the height of his form at present, doing very well in the provincial championship at Auckland. The bowling will no doubt be in the hands of the Lyon brothers. Both are very consistent trundlers and if the wicket is to their liking, should do a lot of damage. As the opening pair for Waikato they are also capable of giving the team a good start but so far this season they havj not been able to stay at the wickets together for long. WAIKATO BEATS RODNEY COUNTRY WEEK TOURNAMENT (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Friday Hamilton accounted for Rodney by 31 runs yesterday when the Country Week tournament was resumed.
