CARNIVAL CONTINUES GENTLEMAN JOE IN FIRST SANDUSKY WINS BIG EVENT (Special from “Padlock.”) AUCKLAND, Thursday The Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting was continued to-day at Alexandra Park, Epsom, in fine weather and before another large attendance. Winner trained by owner, Christchurch, unite a number made mistakes early, among them Gentleman Joe. who, however, lost little ground through the lapses he made. Fifty yards from the post, as he and Canadian were fighting it out, he again went to a break, but he settled down to hold on and win narrowly.
By the time they had Tairly settled down, Braemar was in charge passing the stands from Aurumar, Gentleman Joe, and Canadian. Gentleman Joe, who had broken a couple of times up to this stage, was m charge at the completion or a further circuit, showing out passing the stands from Aurumar, Canadian, Braemar and Nelson Glory, with a gap to Iron Man. Fleet Arrow and Barney Bingen. Canadian ran up to Gentleman Joe three furlongs rrom home and had actually headed him here, but at the home turn the pair were locked together, clear of Aurumar. In an exciting finish. Gentleman Joe got the verdict by hair-a-head over Canadian, with Aurumar seven lengths away third. Nelson Glory was a Turther two lengths away fourth. J. Smith, Takanlni Resistance, always handily placed, finished full of running while Axminster, who had every chance, was going solidly at the end and appealed as an early winner. Several of the starters, including Grand Dame and Winhisway broke badly early and Gipsy Light went to the front along the back and past the stands where she wa> followed by Our Jewel, Moriori, Resistance. Axminster, Top Hand, Winhisway, Jewel Crest and Grand Dame. Moriori ran up behind Gipsy Light along the back the last time with Our Jewel following closely in Tront of Resistance. Top Hand and Axminster. Three Turlongs from home Gipsy Light was showing the way to Our Jewel and Moriori with Resistance pacing well in front of Axminister. There was no alteration as the field levelled up for home, Resistance going through to win by two and a-half lengths from Axminister with a further gap of two lengths to Gipsy Light. Van Derby, backed down to inside evens, gave a brilliant exhibition, though he had nothing to spare in a torrid duel over the last 100 yards with Uenuku, who tried to win from end to end, only to fail by the narrowest of margins. Uenuku was first to show out and led past the stands from Precious Metal, Connenora, Royal Jewel, Argolis, Vanora, Civic and Red Frontier. Uenuku was clear of Precious Metal as they raced along the back the last time, with Connenora handy in from or Royal Jewel, Argolis. Vanora, Civic and Van Derby, who was commencing a brilliant move, on the outside or the field. Three furlongs from home. Van Derby's run had taken him up third, behind Uenuku and Precious Metal, and the trio was clear into the straight from Connenora. Civic and Glorietta. It was a thrilling finish, the hot favourite just wearing down Uenuku to snatch victory on the post by a short head, with Precious Metal two and a-half lengths away third. The Claudeland-trained Our Peggv made a determined bid to emulate th'» achievement of Navy Blue who won the Auckland Trotting Cup. but after making the pace throughout and leading hairway down the running she was just headed by Sandusky who finished solidly.
